I have a 99 Nissan Altima, standard.. today, when I started driving it to work, it was fine, but after a few minutes, when I put the car in neutral, the rpm was going from 2 to 3.5 and the engine was making the noise... When I put the car in gear, it seems fine, but at a stop light, when it is in neutral, the rpm is jumping...

Thank you for your answers.

Maybe a dirty throttle positioning sensor :(

It could possibly be a pressure leak, but maybe not, since a pressure leak would lower rpm, not increase it. it could be that something is changing the position of the air intake in neutral, possibly avibration, which could also be the source of that 'strange noise', unless the noise is coming from the engine. get it fixed immedietly, from a trusted dealer, this could be dangerous.

Make sure your floor mat is not pressing on the throttle. Any other information Check Engine Light? I would have the throttle cable checked and have the mechanic look for air leaks vacuum hose might have come off.

wow! it could be that you need new spark plugs(if they are new) then you need to have the gap re-checked on them, have the gap checked and use what tool Nissan says to use for your car( also if you put cheap spark plugs in that could do it) "cars can be funny and want the same or better grade parts" One more thing to check if you car has a lot of miles on it it may need a new speed senor check w/dealer service department.

Well, it can't be anything serious, because Japanese cars don't have problems. They run forever. At least that what everyone claims on here. Right? Anyway, yes, check for a vacuum leak.

Check your vacuum and your O2 senser. They might need to be replaced

Maybe a vacuum leak or stuck E.G.R. valve could do it.
