Today, the dog that I grew up with was put to sleep. I didn't realize how much it would hurt until I got home. I miss her so much already, and I can stop thinking about her just laying dead at the vet. I feel terrible. What can I do to feel better?

I truely understand your feelings. I work in a vet hospital and see this happen on a daily basis and still cannot keep my eyes from tearing. I think ,as in other types of mournings that time is the only really solution. The first days will be terribly sad and seem surreal but then as time passes bye you will be better prepared to accept the loss. Many people react differently to mourning their pets, some go straight to the shelter and adopt a new puppy, others will need time before accepting a new pet. You have many precious memories and you should think of all the good times spent together. Unfortunately, we live in a physical world and bodies fail, get sick or old and this is inevitable. Your dog now though is in another dimension, the spiritual world and I am sure he /she is in a better place. There are many websites that can help you cope with grieving. It is a tough process, but the word is right, it is a process and as I said time is the only solution to feeling better. Take care.

When we lose anyone, even a pet it takes time to grieve the loss. The healing doesn't happen overnight. There are many stages of grief right now you are only feeling the sadness and pain. Soon you will be able to look back on all the good times you had with your dog and all the fun you shared. And maybe someday you will even think about getting another dog, not to replace the one you lost because that is not possible but to bring new joy to your life and build new memories. Take care.

I know how you feel and I am sorry for you loss. It is as hard to lose a pet as it is to lose anyone else in your life, but just give yourself some time to grieve and in time it will become easier.
when I had to put my dog to sleep a few years ago I went to the local pound and played with some of the animals there. That helped me to take my mind off the loss for a little while maybe this could work for you.

I know that it made me feel better (a little anyway) to have my cat cremated. When I lost my cat I had him privately cremated so I could have his ashes. It'll take awhile to get the ashes back (couple weeks generally)... but then you'll always have him there. It's silly, but I felt like my cat would have felt abandoned by me if I left him there, or even if I buried him and then moved... so by having his ashes... he moves with me.

I would suggest you wait a few months before getting another pet. If you rush it, it won't feel right. Wait until the next perfect animal comes along... you'll know when you see it. It will never replace your lost pet... but it will enter a new spot in your heart. I've had 3 cats (over the past 20yrs) that I cherished with all my heart. I felt empty when each of them died and I felt reluctant to get another cat... fearing I'd forget about the old one. You never forget. They dont replace each other... they just each leave you with their own special memories. :)

I'm so sorry you lost your companion. I know how hard it is to loose. I had a bestfriend (golden retrever) for 13 years and he passed away when i was 19 ,on christmas eve.

The only that I found that helped was getting my mind off of the whole mess. I keeped myself busy and when there was nothing else to do, it just took time.

once again Im sorry and my heart goes out to you.

First, I'm so sorry. Its always hard to lose a member of the family.

I think the best way to get over it is to get active--go for a run, go shopping, just get out and let yourself focus on something else.
Again I'm so sorry

It's very sad and only time will heal the pain. Atleast she died peacefully so you have to think of it this way. She's in heaven now:)
