anyone know the role of a rabbit in a forest possibly?

Prey item, mostly. A rabbit is a primary consumer, which means it eats plants. Secondary consumers and above will probably eat the rabbit, so it fills a prey niche.

it's at a level just above plants, rabbits keep down the vegetation and serves as a food source for perdators
