Geez, I'm a little afraid of how wrong some of these answers are.

The first thing you'll want to do is visit the state department site and take a look at the passport requirements. You can download the application right from the website so that you have to spend less time at the acceptance facility.

Next - Make a note of your closest passport acceptance facility. It is not necessarily your local post office - our local PO does not do passports. If you are in a rush, there are regional acceptance offices that can get it to you quicker. It's pricier, but you'll get it far quicker.

Next, get your photo. It's easier to just go to a place that takes passport photos than to deal with doing it yourself. My local Walgreen's, Costco, AAA, Grocery Store, and Mailboxes Etc. take passport photos. There is also typically a heading in the phone book for "Passport Photos"

Then, visit the acceptance office with all your information and paperwork. Many PO's will NOT TAKE credit cards so be sure to bring plenty of cash or your checkbook with you. The current fee for a non-rush passport is $97.

Finally, wait your 4-6 weeks (mine arrived in 2-3). Keep your passport in safe place and make several copies of it in case it is lost at any point.

Walgreens Passports

first you need to have a passport photo taken, which conforms to certain requirements. Walgreens photo department will do this while you wait for less than ten bucks. Take the photo, along with your birth certificate, to the US post office during hours that the passport office is open. They will process the papers and you receive the passport in the mail in several weeks. If you can't wait that long, some major cities will process in a short time, but you need to stand in a long queue. (Chicago will do this.) Call your local post office for more detailed info.

The average is six weeks for a US citizen to get a passport... so says the Passport Services Office. To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to a "passport acceptance facility". You can get one faster if you live near one of the 13 regional passport agencies. You must make an appointment for this service. For more information to http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html It always pays to get your passport early to avoid that stress if you can. Call them to see if you can get it done faster. I think it's $97 unless you need a rush service.

If you're flying to Mexico after early Jan 07, you'll need a passport, if you're driving, you have another year.

You get it at the post office. They take your picture and everything. I THINK it costs around $145 but I can't remember. But the post office will tell you and that is where the forms are and everything.
