hellooo, I'm 5'5, and 112 pounds. I decided to count my calories today out of curiousty, just to see how much I usually eat. It averaged out to be almost 800 calories. I'm not dieting or anything, its just that I eat when I'm hungry. I also run everyday, just so that I can maintain a fit body. Soo..is that enough calories? Does it matter as long as I feel ok?

You may feel ok today, but a couple more days of eating like that and I can almost promise you WILL pass out (that's what happens when you don't take in enough calories to sustain your daily activity). And as a runner, you need to eat a LOT more, because you will burn off so much while running. At 5'5" and 112 you are already on the slim side. I strongly urge you to talk to an exercise physiologist to find out how many calories you should be consuming daily.

-No. That may be half enough considering your weight and activity level. What you eat enters into it too. If you continue to eat so little, your body will use up your muscle tissue. The heart is a muscle. It can be seriously damaged. I am a bit concerned that you may have a problem called anorexia- nervosa. There are usually emotional problems behind it. Many people who have it die. Even when they are so thin that they look deformed, they look fat to themselves, and it is very hard to convince them otherwise, because that is what they see. Talk to someone about the possibility: A parent, teacher, school nurse.

It is possible you miscounted calories, or this was an unusual day, and you usually eat more, but it sounds to me like 1800 to 2000 calories would be much more reasonable for you.

Are you losing weight? If you are maintaining your weight on that number of calories, it could be that your metabolism is slower than normal. There is nothing wrong with that. Typically 1200 calories a day is the minimum suggested. Since you are probably not getting sufficient vitamins and minerals at that calorie level, you might want to be taking a multivitamin.

Many people will tell you that you should eat more, but that could cause you to gain weight. As long as your bones are not sticking out, and everyone around you agrees that you look healthy, don't worry about it.

I just had this discussion with my cousin's friend. She is about 100 pounds but she looks healthy. If my cousing were only 100 pounds she would look anorexic. If I were 100 pounds, I'd be dead already. It just depends on your body type. I assume you have a very small frame. There is nothing wrong with that.

No, I don't think that's enough.

Below is a link to an article I read on Yahoo Health on July 31, 2006. It was written by Joy Bauer, M.S, R.D, C.D.N
The article was titled "Metabolism: Give it a Boost"

It's a short article but very informative. It will tell you why you should eat at least 1000 calories a day.

I dont know what kg you are- in Australia we use kilograms to measure weight. But I dont think counting calories is going to help- its just gonna drive you nuts!!! There are plenty of things you can do as well as eating the right thing. Make sure you dont eat too late at night, cut out excess fatty and sugary foods out of your diet, do exercise that you enjoy and that gets your increases your heart rate, limit time spent watching tv, spend more time outdoors etc

If your were dieting than you would need at least need 1200 calories. But since your a runner you will need more to sustain your daily living plus your running. I would recommend about consuming about 2000 calories per day.

Quite the opposite, that is too LOW. That said, you might have a slow metabolism or you might eat higher amounts on other days. If you feel good, have plenty of energy, and are not losing weight, I would not bother counting anything.

Every now and then I think it's okay...but it's not enough for every day. Stop being so obsessed about your body!!! If I only ate when I'm hungry I probably wouldnt eat as much as I do, so start paying more attention to what your body NEEDS, not just what you THINK it needs.
