If you already have your ears pierced why don't you know if it hurts? On the other hand if you are going to have a needle put through your earlobe how can you think it won't hurt? Sorry I just had to be a little sarcastic here.
Anyway, of course it hurts! But it only hurts for a second and then its over. You may have some discomfort while it is healing if you lay on that side of your head.
As far as piercing the top of your ear there are things to consider and make sure happen.
First, this pierces cartilage not just skin and fat so it hurts a lot more. Cartilage does not have a blood supply for the most part so it doesn't heal like most things. It will take a lot longer and it is usually pretty sore for quite a while if it is laid on or hit with a comb, you get the idea.
You need to make sure you get this done by someone who knows what they are doing. They need to be experienced in cartilage piercing and most of the places in the mall aren't no matter what they tell you. I would recommend you go to a body piercer. You can find places that just do piercing if you live in a city where it is popular. Or you can get it done at a tattoo parlor. They almost always have someone who does body piercing.

The biggest question for whoever is going to do it is, "Are you going to use a hollow point needle?" The guns the malls use are a solid point needle and so the tissue is just pushed aside to make the hole. This is OK in your ear lobe because of the kind of tissue. But for cartilage piercing you want that piece actually removed. This makes it much less painful during healing and also lets it heal much faster. This is true of other piercings as well but that's a "hole" other story.

One more thing. An infection in a cartilage piercing is much more serious than in your earlobe. So make sure you take care of it as instructed by your body piercer.

Good Luck
Karen

No. For me, it only stung for about 2 seconds and then the put on this pain reliever stuff and it stopped hurting. It is worth it to have your ears pierced, because then you can wear cool earrings. I also got them pierced when I was 7.

It felt like I was being pinched really hard for a spit second, the noise or the piercing gun startled me more than the percing itself.

Does not hurt a bit. Tell them to do it by surprise, then you'll have no idea it even happened.
