A book is a rather generic term for well, books.

A novel is a specific classification of a book, a novel generally tells a story; characters, plot, begginging middle and end.

But a book can encompass anything that is paper bound in a cover, be it soft or hard. It can be a text book, a novel, instruction booklet, etc. They are all books, but they are special classifications of them.

a novel is a book that tells a story, and is usually read for pleasure. A novel is a book, but a book is not necessarily a novel. A book could be a textbook, a children's book, a picture book, nursery rhyme books etc
