Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness that affects a person's ability to think and function well. Schizophrenia may be identified by the presence of certain "classic" symptoms that you may have seen in movies such as hearing voices or seeing things that aren't there. Be aware that only a doctor, usually a psychiatrist can diagnose and treat schizophrenia. A person who is hearing voices or seeing things may be abusing certain street drugs. There are no medical tests to diagnose schizophrenia. Doctors make a diagnosis based on the symptoms that a patient is exhibiting and by obtaining a complete history of past symptoms, medical history and lifestyle. This information is obtained from the patient and family members. Once a diagnosis is made the physician will work with the patient to find the right treatment.

There are lots of schizophrenia meds on the market. Some of them include Geodon, Resperdal and Zyprexa. Depending on the type of schizophrenia you have, your doctor can prescribe an antipsychotic to meet your needs. The newer ones are definitely more effective than the older ones. It all depends on the individual. If a person is unable (or unwilling at the time) to shoulder the sometimes-heavy load of responsibility for their own health, or if their "premorbid level of functioning" was not high, then (with their informed consent) risperidone or another 2G antipsychotic med is probably advisable, at least for 3 months or so. On the other hand, if they are better resourced (mostly intra-personally), then I would advocate dedicating oneself to optimising their health so that their mind may heal itself. This would entail dedication to researching and experimenting with diet/nutrition/supplements, physical and mental exercise, emotion management and sensible-paced spiritual growth. Yes, all of that takes time and dedication, but its pay-offs compare favourably to those offered by conventional medicine, at least for some people.

Find a psychiatrist. Only a professional psychiatrist can diagnose the severity of the illness, and what medications, if any might apply.

WebMD might help in at least improving your understanding of the disease, but only a psychiatrist can provide that critical diagnose and prescription.
