Can not people see that now it is pit bulls next it well be some other large breed of dog. When there is no more pit bulls people will turn on a different breed. The bad guys will use other dogs to fight and gruad thier drugs. Here is a little know fact. In St Paul Minnesota there were about 13,000 dog bites a year. Most dogs were "family breeds" like cocker spanils, collies and the like. Last year that figuare droped more than in half with the number of pit bulls making up about half of the pet dog population. If pits are so bad why did the number of dog bites go down when the pit population went up. We who fight BLS are fight not just for our dogs but for everyone who owns a breed that will become a target in the future

This is a joke, right? You are just trying to anger people by saying that you fight dogs, right? You don't actually expect normal rational people to support such an unethical sport as dog fighting? Seriously, to even joke about fighting dogs shows that you need to grow up. And if you aren't joking, you are delusional. Dog fighting is trashy, illegal, and unethical. Shame on you.

Edit: Oh, I get it. You are not fighting dogs you are fighting *for* dogs. This was worded poorly on your part. You aren't going to win your fight on here as long as people continue to breed them stupidly. Breed legislation hopes to cut down on that. It's a sticky subject and this may not be the forum for it. Continue to spread the word by acting locally and lobbying for tougher BYB laws. If this means altering all pet pits, I have no problem with that. If this means only allowing breeders who have been approved by the local breed club to breed them, I have no problem with that either.

And, part of having an effective argument is being able to word it well and being able to contradict counter arguments. Pits were bred to fight an no matter how many statistics you post (without documentation, no less), you can't change that. And you can't change that 'bad guys' still breed these dogs to be mean. It doesn't mean that all of them will snap, but to not even take that into consideration when preaching about them makes your argument ineffective.

I have pits, I love pits, I fight BSL laws. There are many like me. You don't deserve hate mail. People listen too much to the media's biased opinions. I'm sure you've heard it before, but it really is all based on the dog's owner. You are absolutely correct on other breeds being a target next. In the eighties it was Dobermans, in the nineties it was Rotties. There will be another targetted breed eventually. Oh, by the way, if Rudy Gullianni does run in 2008, just be aware that he wants all pit bulls eliminated!!!!!! I only wish these people could spend a day with my pits that were raised with cats, kids, and doggie friends in our neighborhood. As a matter of fact, my 12 year old daughter was bitten twice, not by our dogs, but by two small mutts that "look" harmless belong to an elderly woman who was visiting her relatives next door! One of those "harmless" little mutts actually put a hole through my daughters ear! Mean while, their young children come to our house and play with our dogs with out a problem. (Always supervised, of course) Anyway, what it all comes down to is some people are stubborn and opinionated. They hear something and automatically believe it. BSL is discrimination and racism! Dog owners need to be held responsible for their own dog's actions.

First of all it is not right for people to send you hate e-mail in reference to standing up for Pit Bulls. This is wrong and I would report the people who send you hate email. Open the full headers of the hate email you get and turn those people in as this is harassment.

As far as posting to the board, yes everyone has freedome of speech and has the right to express their own opinions or feelings about anything. But....they should not be sending you hate email.

Pit Bulls if trained properly are wonderful pets to have. I have a registered Pit Bull. She is very loving to me, and my family and grand children. She also gets along well with all other dogs. I rescued my Pit Bull and nursed her back to health. She is about 4 years old. I also have trained many dogs in the past at dog training school. My Pit Bull is trained and is very obedient.

There are still people in this world that train their Pit Bulls to fight or attack on command. This is why the Pit Bulls got such a bad wrap sheet. Its those owners who are fault, not the Pit Bulls.

Hope this helps :-)

ok i gotta put my 2 cents in, while i don't own a pit(now) i know several people who do and their dogs are better trained and responsive than some children you see in the mall running around yelling screaming and running into people with saying sorry or anything else, the pits i know are more interested in finding the non-existent mouse in the door than who comes thru it These pits are at a shop in midland, split is so well trained that you can place any kind of food on the floor and he will sit there (shaking) until you tell him ok then he will get it. point is someone (not me i don't know enough) needs to create a website for nothing but pits and tricks they do and funny stuff all dogs do so people will see this site and possibly learn something about pits

People are sending you hate mail? That's pretty sad. Pit Bulls may not be used for nice purposes, but any dog is a decent dog as long as its trained properly. They can't help being the thug's favourite weapon of choice. Some breeds might need a more experieneced handler, but as long as it's trained properly and knows who's boss any pit bull would probably be lovely.

Well, in my case, we had a neighbor who had 2 of them and they were terrors. They terrorized our neighborhood for quite a while and I had to run to my house more than once with my children in my arms when they would come in our yard. They attacked our then puppy. And finally ended their reign of terror by killing another neighbor's cat and biting another neighbor. With all the calls to the police, they finally put the dogs down.
People like my neighbors are the ones you should be mad at, they get pitbulls and then do not take the time to train them or care enough to keep them properly. I will tell you that I tense up everytime I see a pitbull. If a cocker spaniel bit my child, he would probably come away with a bite and that's it. With a pitbull the outcome would probably be much worse.
I don't agree that you should get hatemail. But you should understand people's fears and do what you can to educate others about the breed.

I live in a suburb of Minneapolis and it seems like there are many ignorant people in this city but not all are ignorant. My neighbor poisoned and killed my 7 year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier because he did not want a "pit bull" in his neighborhood! I did everything within the law to keep him away from my dogs, myself and my property but he still killed her and threatened to kill a rescue of mine that was only at my home for one month. HE IS IGNORANT and we just have to pray that he will get his payment someday.
There is not breed specific legislation in the state of Minnesota but there is in many states and it angers me to no end. Why don't we just say that we don't want blonde children in our neighborhoods because there were blonde people in the past who have "bitten" many people! Realistically? We need to change the image through education and also pushing the media to stop using "pit bull" as a general breed for any dog attack. We also need to be aware of the quality of life for all dogs and report those who are not treating any animal well.
I currently have a Siberian Husky and I would not let a child in the back yard with him because he is very shy but I would have let any child in the back yard with my "pit" because she loved children and was so gentle. But she was a product of her environment, which was a loving nurturing home.
That's all.

As a groomer, I'm a lot more likely to get bitten by a cocker or lhasa than a pittie.

It's a shame the pit bulls attract so many morons for owners.

Ummm....Stalkers....the asker isn't saying he fights Pit Bulls, he's saying he fights BSL (Breed Specific Legislation).

I LOVE Pit Bulls! Bring on the hate mail! People only hate things that they are afraid of. Fortunately I have had the pleasure of sharing my life with the most wonderful Pit Bull in the world.

She loves absolutely EVERYONE, she even breaks the end of her tail open from wagging too hard! She gets along with all other dogs, she smothers me with kisses every day and night and she snuggles with me. She LOVES small children and has NEVER acted inappropriately to ANY human.

You are also 100% correct that cocker spaniels were the # 1, NUMBER ONE, biting breed last year!!!

this is what i have always thought on the subject. its not the dog its the master. all dogs are born good (like people) but it depends on how there masters treated them. put it this way. say you got a dog and the person you got it from said it was always good and sweet, and lets say he wasn't lying. but then the new owner puts him on a cable in the back yard and never plays with him and the only time he comes out to see him was when the owner gave him food. now if that dog turned mean who can say that's wrong? its not the dog, it was the owner who turned that dog mean. i am so sick of hearing people blaming these kinds of dogs or really any large dog for biting people. if a little dog bit someone theyd just laugh and shake it of, but if a big dog bites you than everyone freaks out like its a killer. i am so sick of stupid people saying this when they themselves have probably never even had a pet. its stupid.
