My mum has an RCA true flat tv that goes loud/quiet, off/on at random. Anyone know about this?

It turns itself on and off at random and the volume goes quiet and full blast. Even in the middle of the night when everyone's asleep. It's now sitting unplugged in the living room.

No it's not a ghost your unit has a malfunction, I suspect something wrong with the control IC.
If your unit can turn on itself after you unplugged the power cable, than it's a ghost.
