The head must be removed.

I had a tick in my navel (imagine that!) and when the doctor attempted to remove it the head detached. A small inscision had to be made to remove it or else it could cause a significant infection.

Yes, leaving the head of the tick in the dog may lead to Ergofirmiasis - a disease prominently believed to come from not expounding the head of the tick. The best way to get a tick from a dogs skin is to use heat or alcohol. A match which is held close will make the tick release from the skin where it can be expactorated. Then you drink the alcohol.

The tick can continue to bite and what could happen is that
a) the dog will get an infection at the site of the bite
b) the dog is more likely to pick up diseases like Lyme disease that the tick MIGHT be carrying.

The body of the tick doens't matter, it's the head that needs to be removed, and a vet can do this for you pretty quickly and run any blood tests to check for diseases.

It is not a big deal, nor a medical emergency....Nothing will happen. The head will work its way out on its own. Simply clean the area with peroxide and apply a bit of neosporin. There may be a bump, red spot and/or scab there for a few days but this is normal.

We remove a lot of ticks from dogs & cats at the hospital and we also field a ton of calls on this very subject during tick season.

This site says not to worry - but does suggest spraying the wound with a Hydrocortisone spray.

However this site says that it may lead to inflamation & secondary infection.

So I guess if you've got to go the vet for the antiseptic spray then it may be just as well to take your dog too & ask the vets advice about the tick head.

Light a match and blow it out and stick it to the dog while it is still hot and pour some alcohol on it. I use to work at a humane society and thats what we did. Good luck

Take him to the vet, NOW. If you think the head is still in there, the body can start to grow back and the dog can get lime disease or rocky mountain fever, either of which can easily kill it. It will need to get the head removed and an antibiotic shot. AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, because the proccess can happen very quickly.

I would advise getting the dog to a vet since the risk for serious complications will arise. Here is a link for more information. Please be careful.
