I purchased it from someone who does not know the name of the original owner. (I know, fishy) I am trying to re-register it through Dell, but they need the name of the previous owner to proceed. I tried changing something on it that only the previous administrator could do, and now I can't run windows without entering the username and password. Is there any way to fix this problem or am I screwed?

during power up one of the Function keys will let you boot into safe mode....well in that menu you can see a command line login, if you know the command line well you can do anything but it takes a while to do but once your in, change away anything. Just so u know, anything can be done from the command line before the actual windows login screen appears. Or just use a simple Linux live cd, you don't need to install live cds from linux

All of the Dell PCs I know of have a label on them that indicate what they call a SERVICE TAG. Most also now have the Windows Product Key on this same label.

If the Service Tag is on there, you should be able to give that to Dell or check it out on the Internet and they telll you what the original configuration was and who it was sold to, if they officially registered with Dell. (Not sure if you are automatically registered just by ordering the computer in the first place).

If you are missing the service tag on your second-hand PC, it is likely because the person who sold it to you (or the person who sold it to them) did not want it traced back! Not a good sign.

ok so you want access to the windows password list.
Get a bootable linux disk and boot off of the disk. muttle your way over to the passwords users directory and delete it.
