I'm not entirely sure, but I think it originated with the Rolling Stones as they described their backstage parties for an interview of somesort. The saying has pretty much been adopted by every rock group and wannabe rocker eversince as a way of answering why they're in the music buisness.

The phrase "Sex, Drugs, and Rock-n-Roll exactly as stated here, was created by me in the summer of 1976 and put on the front license plate area (legal in Florida at the time) of a 1966 Pontiac Bonneville, a full year before Ian Dury (one of my favorites) created the title Sex AND Drugs... which fit the singing much better. Also my text was at least a year before the buttons, badges, t-shirts, and stuff of text similar to Ian Dury and the Blockheads imitations, which were copyrighted material. My apologies for taking so long to ask for credit, the internet makes all the difference. I still have that license plate in excellent condition, bright red felt tip pen on white Plexiglas. For further info, contact Michael at mtodance@yahoo.com thank you for your interest.
