It's a consequence of seratonin deprevation. During periods of agony and emotional pain, seratonin levels plumet, causing a host of neurophysiological effects elsewhere in the body. There is a commercial running on TV in the USA right now for a drug that treats both depression and the physical pain often associated with depression. It's the one where the script starts, "Where does depression hurt? -- everywhere."

Heartache really is in the heart. Just because the chemicals are also in the brain doesn't mean they're not also in the heart. Studies have come out that talk about emotional pain being comparable to physical pain.

Because what is produced in the brain causes or can cause physical pain. The blood maybe pumped harder, the nervous system is affected, and as the heart is at the centre of the blood circulation, it is what is affected by the emotional pain. (Note: my answer doesn't satisfy me completely either, but it's the closest I can get)

there has been recent dicoveries that have shown the heart to have a thinking brain ... the heart brain
this part of the heart acts more quickly emotionally and instinctively than the head brain does just a little piece of random information xx
