Good idea, but consider this:
New Jersey changed its driver license laws after 9/11. They required several pieces of ID, two of which were a civil birth certificate (hospital and religious not accepted) and a passport, either US or foreign, with the apporpriate immigration stamps. When I got my DL in 2003 I waited in line and watched several Americans get turned away because they didn't have ID that many Americans don't have (or so it seems). The gentleman of Chinese extraction ahead of me in the line and I had no problem getting our licenses because we were always more likely to have the required paperwork (heck, you need a passport to come here unless crossing from a land border!)
So, if we are going to have such a system it will need to be biometrically controlled. The SS Card isn't going to cut it. That is too easy to fake. Legal aliens have their Green Card, of course, but citizens would need to carry a national ID card. Is that really what you want? Is that a fair trade, to give up that privacy for an improvement in daily life? It's a tough call.

Well you have to consider this. Since all the states made it impossible to get a drivers license if you are here illegally, hit and run incidents have multiplied. Of course they have no insurance because you need a license for that. When they get arrested, they don't have ID so they can give any fake name and guess what, that arrest can get lost or tacked onto an innocent person with the name they gave. No ID means they cash their check at check cashing places that will let them cash a forged check (maybe yours) because there is no way to know.........
They are going to drive, what is the purpose of having unlicensed drivers without insurance????? If they are here illegally, that is all the more reason we need to know who they are. So I am against not giving them drivers licenses.

Yes I think if you are an American then you should have no problems proving that, especially to help stop these invaders.
-open bank account
-rent a house
-apply for a job
-apply for drivers licences
I think that would pretty much do it.

Good idea, but whose going to implement it and how about the potential for abuse. Most of the information is subject to the privacy act.

When you apply for a job, open a bank account, go for your driver's license, and the final $100,000 answer is...... when you cross the border
