Close. It's Vatican City, the city built on 7 hills (see Rev. 17:9). This is not to say that the Catholic Church is the false religion mentioned in Rev. 17. I do not believe a traditional Pope would do the things that are described in this prophecy.

Have you ever heard of the prophecy of Saint Malachy? He prophesied that the current Pope will be the last one; the next one will be Pope during the Tribulation. If the prophecy is correct, it's possible the next Pope isn't a true Catholic at all, but a false one.

Peace.

EDIT: "Passerby," Rev. 17:18 reads: "And the woman whom you saw is that great CITY which reigns over the kings of the earth.”

Some authors like Hislop says so. But, Babylon the Great is said to be sitting (that is in control of) many nations. Catholicism although popular in many lands do not control that many. So, Babylon the Great must be the representation of All the False Religions of this world that have control over so many of us.

The Whore of Babylon is a stable occasion, yet it extremely is the place the assessment ends up in my humble opinion. To John's on the spot aim industry, she represented Rome, which had the blood of many Christian martyrs on its palms. yet interior the extra suitable scheme of the prophecy, she stands for ungodly earthly capability of all varieties. In John's imaginative and prescient, she could be slain by utilising different powers of the earth, like her inspired by utilising greed and vice. John prophesied the autumn of the Whore of Babylon and warned all believers to resign the greed an lust she symbolized lest they, too, get caught up interior the judgement. My information of Nero is that he substitute into extremely touched interior the top in case you may choose for to call it civil engineering-------non secular extremity must be the Egyptian prophesy. it extremely is my ideas on the venture.

Babylon was code for Rome in the time of persecution of the first Christians.

To those who have pointed to the Roman Catholic Church, this is a bit simplistic. If such a Church was secretely false, and this verse indicated that such a Church would be based in Rome, they should change their name and their head office location. Otherwise, you might as well call yourself the "we'll sneakily lead you to hell" church.

The Roman Catholic Church is named such because of the primacy of the role of the Bishop of Rome in the Early Church (the Pope)

Yes, according to many scholars and the fact that Revelation wasn't added till much later. Most Christian Scholars think that Revelation was a code written by a Jew to the other Jews of the coming war. Which fits rather nicely in with the war Nero waged against Jews and any other group he thought was out to get him. (He was terribly paranoid.)

No.

The fact that the Catholic Church is singled out by Fundamentalists as the Whore reveals that they intuit the fact it has an important role in God’s plan. No other church gets accused of being the Whore—only the Catholic Church. And it is understandable why: The Catholic Church is the largest Christian body, larger than all other Christian bodies put together, suggesting a prominent place in God’s plan. Fundamentalists assume, without objectively looking at the evidence, that the Catholic Church cannot be the Bride of Christ, so it must be the Whore of Babylon.

Yet the evidence for its true role is plain. The First Vatican Council taught that "the Church itself . . . because of its marvelous propagation, its exceptional holiness, and inexhaustible fruitfulness in all good works; because of its Catholic unity and invincible stability, is a very great and perpetual motive of credibility and an incontestable witness of its own divine mission" (On the Catholic Faith 3).

So why is the Bride maligned as the Whore? Jesus himself answered the question: "If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household" (Matt. 10:25). "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world . . . the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you" (John 15:18–20).

No, actually (believe it or not) The United States of America is what Revelations was talking about. The U.S. is the new Roman Empire. North America as we know it is the Great Whore of Babylon.

I think it may be. Revelation says this city would have seven hills, and that all the world would admire it with all its beauty and riches. Guess what city sits on seven hills? Guess what city is called the 'City of Seven Hills'? ROME.
Good question, I've thought of this myself.
