Jesus and the disciples never practiced this. Where and how did it start?

Being "slain in the Spirit' is mostly a Pentecostal church experience, although some "Charismatic churches" allow this also along with 'dancing in the Spirit', 'singing in the Spirit', 'tongues' and 'prophecy'.
These experiences are not allowed by "Mainline Denominational churches". The main belief amongst Pentecostals is 'being slain in the Spirit' is an event that takes place when the the Spirit of God is felt so strongly that one can no longer stand in the presence of God. In most experiences between God and man, especially in the Old Testament, the person having such an encounter would "fall down as one dead", or fall prostrate unable to stand in the Glory of God. In the book of Acts in the New Testament it says that while they (the disciples and other believers) were assembled, the Holy Spirit came upon them as a mighty rushing wind and there were 'signs and miracles' manifested. Mainline Denominational churches would say that that was a special dispensation only for that time and not revelant nor applicable today. Pentecostal churches would say that 'being slain in the Spirit is one of the evidences of the power of God being present and relevant today. The people that Jesus healed or delivered from evil spirits would often cast themselves down as one dead. This also might have relevance to Pentecostals as 'being slain in the Spirit' often happens when people have come forward for prayer to be healed of sickness and oppression. Whether every event of being slain in the Spirit is real or not, I cannot say for certain--people have many motives, some preachers may have motives--but I do not think this discounts the whole process or nullifies the experience as a whole as some people feel genuinely touched by the LORD, and others are healed by God. Again, this experience is generally referred to as Jesus manifesting himself through His Spirit as exemplified in the book of Acts, and many Pentecostals and Charismatics would say this is a sign that we are actually living in the Last Days when "God's Spirit shall be poured out upon all flesh."

the Charismatic circles of Christian Churches to designate a supposed movement of the Holy Spirit upon a person. The claim is that the Holy Spirit moves with such power on a person, that the person is "slain." This does not mean the person dies, but that he/she is so overcome by the presence of the Spirit that he/she falls down to the ground being completely overcome.

It just means being overcome by the Holy Spirit. Read about the day of Pentecost in Acts, Chapter 1.

Yah being overcome by the Holy Spirit- but many churches take this out of context- and it becomes a "show" a lot of bad tv evangelists have taken this in vain. Example: Benny Hinn- he loves to make money- so many believe he is slaying people in the Spirit- when he is not. It is a show. Sad when people do not take the word of God seriously and when they abuse it.

The soul and the spirit are often confused, the soul is your physical body and will one day die, the spirit is the real you
which came from God and will never die.
