It absolutely happens. Here and out in the world. Where I live, it's not socially acceptable to be anything other than xian. I've been harrassed and shamed for not wanting to go to church with coworkers. And then when I finally snapped and said I didn't want to go because I don't believe in god, they became downright nasty, or condescending. With the: "I feel so sorry for you." and "You should reconsider, before it's too late and you burn in hell."
That's one example. It happens all the time. Generally, I don't advertise my religion unless backed into a corner. On these forums, of course, all that aggression is more up front from all sides.

It's like any other group of people. I was in an abusive, unfaithful (on his side) relationship with a Christian; I have worked alongside them on charity projects and been astounded at their willingness to live their beliefs; I have been screamed at for my beliefs by Christians; I have had them stand by me in support of helping all humanity have a better life. It's like anything else...some good, some not so good.
(The realization hit me the other day that the only people who really care about dividing everyone into Christian and non-Christian are Christians...)

Most of the Christians I know in person are very nice people. Most of the Christians on here are cool and there are some that love to tell eveyone their going to hell. But thats ok by me. There are idiots all over the world as there are in this forum and that goes for ALL people religious or not.

You have to understand that by posting anything religious or philosophical in this venue, it automaticially presents the perfect place for those who love to create controversy.
You just have to overlook those negatives which will as surely will be present the first time anything religious is asked. That is bound to make us all sad, but for all the negatives, I think the positives outweigh them.
Don't get discouraged, and realize those "Christians" that yelled and stuff, don't represent the majority.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and you have mine.
Keep smiling!!!

The only place I've ever seen Christians being mean is on here. Most of the Christians I know are pretty cool and open minded.

For the most part Christians treat me well. I am Gnostic so I can pass as a christian as long as the discussion doesn't go on to long. However, when I was pagan and wore a pentacle ring, I had a customer complain to my boss that she didn't want me to wait on her because i wasn't a christian. Other than that no one has been mean to me do to my religion.

Depends on all people as individuals. I have friends that are believers and are great people. We just leave our beliefs as private matters. But I've also seen and heard of people who are nasty to others that don't believe as they do.
In particular I think emotions get stirred up more on the internet, especially when the worst of any group feels more free to open their mouths. Most people here probably feel comfortable enough online to vent their frustrations or let their real feelings be known about some issues.

I am an agnostic. I don't have any problems with most Christians, and have never had problems with them yelling at me (except for some Nuns when I was a kid -- but I wasn't an agnostic yet).
My problem is not with the majority of Christians -- but with the fringe group that wants to legislate their ideas about morality and education.
I don't have a problem with Christians who feel that abortion is wrong. I have a huge problem with Christian Extremists who bomb abortion clinics. I have a smaller problem with those who want to outlaw abortion -- but that is because I feel that the way to eliminate abortion is through education not legislation.
I have no problem with Christians who want to teach their children about the Bible. I have a big problem with those who want it taught in public classrooms. And I have an even bigger problem with the fringe group of Christians who want to teach creationism and deny evolution. I say this knowing that the majority of Christians have no problem with evolution.

Yes that happens. I personally try not to argue that much unless someone says/asks a question that I think is blatantly rude/stupid.
When Madalyn Murray O'Hare sued the government to get prayer out of schools, she received letters from Christians saying they hoped she would die of cancer, for example. There are many people who do not act as they should, on all ends of the spectrum.

I have never been publicly abused by Christians ... well i am thinking and i have to say i was hurt once by a minister
i told him that i was a spiritualist and he forced into my hand a tape recording of a woman's story of how she was possessed by demons by doing what i do ... he told me the same would happen to me ...
this was heightened by the fact i actually went into his Christian book store to ask for books about his faith ...
i felt very sad about this for a long time
( on here sadly it has happened on several occasions )
