it say on the bottle it contains xylometazoline hydrochloride. Does anyone know what that is and is it dangerous or what effect it would have long term ??

Without consulting my drug guide, I would say it is a vasoconstrictor, because it causes the blood vessels iin your nose to contract so they don't leak as much fluid. I suppose if you swallowed a lot of it, it would have some effect on your blood pressure, but not if you're just using it in your nose. Yes, it is 'habit-forming' in the sense that you can have rebound congestion, where your nose gets runny as it goes back to its pre-drugged state, and you have to suffer through it or you'll never get off the otrivin. I think it takes a few days of using it to have that problem though, so don't stop if it's helping.

Believe me on this one!
Otrivine is very habit-forming.
Meaning, if you use it for a long time, and stop, you will have a lot more congestion than you already have.
Then you'll have to quit cold-turkey.
