I paid a school loan to the U.S Dept. of education off, in 1982 and they are telling me to pay, that I never paid it. All I have is my check regs. from that many years ago, and they do have where I paid them in full. they say I have to prove that I pd. Is'nt there a statue of how long the FED. Gov. can come after you for a loan (which I all ready Paid) ???? Please help advise????

If you never got the original promissory note stamped "PAID IN FULL", you may be out of luck. Unless you can contact the bank you wrote the checks on and see if they happen to have copies (not likely, as banks didn't generally do that like they do now).

It's hard to fight the government and win. If the amount was small enough (you'll have to decide that) and you can afford to pay it again, I'd say pay it, get the note back (stamped), and move on.

Of course, this could all be a scam, so you might want to check it out first.

you can look up your loans in the national student loan database to see your entire loan history. www.nslds.ed.gov maybe this would help...
