I get a fair number in for grooming, unfortunately all of them have bad coats and most have nasty temperaments too.

Though not as common as other colors, reds are not exactly "rare". Reds were bred specifically for color, and in the process many other desirable traits of the poodle were somewhat ignored in pursuit of color. As a result, a large percentage of reds suffer from poor temperament and poor coat quality. By virtue of the fading gene that exists in many poodles, the deep "Irish setter" red of a puppy most often fades in adults to a rather unpleasant shade of burnt orange. As a result of these flaws, a really good red is very hard to come by and thus may be considered rare.

They are amongst the most rare of poodle breeds, but are also among the most sickly. In order to get that coloring, a poodle must usually be bred with a miniature poodle. The resulting dogs are sometimes malformed and have joint problems.

Red minis and toys are not rare, red standards are rare and have only been around for a short while.
They have become very popular and very much desired by many!

No, they are just not as popular as the black and whites. Poodles come in all sorts of colors, including red, cream, chocolate, apricot, and silver. But mostly you just see black and white ones both as pets and in the show ring.

No, they aren't rare, although there aren't as many seen as there are blacks, whites, creams and some other colors.
