At the age of 15 you may apply for a coterminous" shotgun certificate wich basicaly is a shotgun and firearms certificat that both expier at the same time (5 year grant) Becaus there both prossesd at the same time it works out cheaper than it would individualy --- shotgun cert £50 firearms £50. coterminous cert £60. If you are thinking of taking up shooting, then i advise you to start your home work, finding out the laws, the guns, affective killing ranges of guns etc, your quarry (game) and everything that will help you to get you certificats.
There is alot of rigma to go through to apply for your certificat, and ounce done you will recive a visit from your local firearms officer. I see othere people are going on about checks etc but since your question was what is the age for----------------------------
If you need any help or advice and more info on other things, or a bit coaching then please e mail me (by going into my profile)
With shooting as my hobbie i keep on top of the laws, what iv wrote is the law, nothing different

The age for a shotgun licence and fire arms licence is 16.
It costs £50 each but if you apply for both at the same time you will only have to pay £65.

Don't listen to some of the stupid answers on here already. You are not subject to yearly checks and if you have a criminal record as long as it is not for a violent crime then you can still get one.

However you will be interviewed as to why you want one and where you are going to use it.
It is fairly easy to get a shotgun licence. As with a fire arms licence you will need to be able to secure the gun. Almost all police forces now insist that you have a gun cabinet or safe and that it is out of sight, or your house is protected by an extremely good alarm system if they are on show.

If you want a fire arms licence you will need permission from land owners to shoot on their land. The police will survey the land to ensure that it is safe to shoot on i.e the shot wont travel for miles if you miss your target. They will also limit you to the type and calibre of gun you have based on your usage.

I would like to see the same type of rules applied to fire arms licences in the UK as they do in Germany, where you have to sit tests on safety and animal ID before they allow you a licence.
