I rehomed a 12 yr old cat who had been stray 6 weeks ago. He rarely ventures out as now enjoys the warmth, food and attention he gets after living on the streets! We've really bonded but last night he went out and hasn't come back! I'm really worried about him as he is old, new to the area, and not very well the moment. I can only assume he is lost. Do cats actually get lost and does anyone have some tips on how I can find him? I fear the longer he is gone the less chance he'll find home again. I've been out looking and calling his name but wonder just how far away he could have got! Advice appreciated.

Just pray, post some flyers of a missing cat, call your local humane society to see if they pick your cat up. Wish ya the best.

Of course cats can become lost/disoriented with unfamiliar surroundings. Particularly if they are still in adaptive mode to a new home and are primarily indoor cats [which by the way vets strongly recommend as outdoor cats are subject to harm by autos, other animals and disease].

Cats who have been indoor/outdoor and in the same environment for awhile can usually easily find their way back home but cats not of that 'ilk' find it very difficult.

My daughter's cat got out accidentally [totally indoor cat] and was gon e 6-1/2 weeks...She finally put up signs WITH his picture on it and he was recovered that evening [as another poster advised]

He was only one courtyard away in her townhouse development!

Report him missing; put up those signs every where you can. I wish you the best of luck and when he returns home, put a collar with ID on it!

The best cat is a house cat. several things could have happened.

He could be in someone else's home.

He could have been chased by a dog or person freaked out and now don't know how to get home.

Hit by car injured and taken to the vet or pound by a motorist.

Post signs and check your local shelter. Put an ad in the paper.

Cats rarely "get lost". But, there are far mroe risks out there than simply being lost. This is why no cat should be allowed outside. I'll link to a resource to help you find your lost pet and if you get him back, keep him inside forever! : )

My cat was gone for a week one time. I believe he had got trapped in a garage, because he came back very sick and was skin and bones.

There are numerous possibilities. I'm sure your imagination is as good as mine. A neighbor may be feeding him. Or God forbid, he got run over by a car.

Was he fixed? Male cats not fixed, don't necessarily call any one place home. They'll always roam. But fixed or not he's most likely not lost, but found somewhere else to dine at least til he gets tired of that and moves on. Some cats and dogs are just that way. They will always keep on moving...its not that they don't love you, its that they love everyone.

i would guess he is just curious after realizing what he has lost (food, love) he will come back. our 3 month old kitten got out and was gone for 2 days we figured she was a gonner but one night she was just sitting meowing on our front porch wanting in. so good luck!
