The American Cancer Society provides several pages on the causes and risks for developing vaginal cancer.

There are several types of vaginal cancer, so there isn't just one cause.

Older women tend to get a type of vaginal cancer called Squamous cell cancer.

Younger women whose mothers took a miscarriage hormonal drug (Diethylstilbestrol) from 1940 to 1971 are at an increased risk to develop a type of vaginal cancer called Clear cell adenocarcinomas.

Certain types of HPV (Human papillomavirus) have been associated with the development of vaginal cancers.

Smoking is also a risk factor to developing this type of cancer.

And, AIDS, also has an association with vaginal cancer.
