I think they're right on the money in wanting to distance themselves from the 'we want spanish' crowd. They left Mexico etc. for a reason. To assimilate someplace, you gotta buckle down and learn the language, at least give it an honest effort. No one expects perfection, but a good-faith effort would be good.

Well what about the 52% who don't and this poll more than likely doesn't include the 12 million illegals of which they don't either. I say we don't care what they want as an official language. Since we wrongfully stole this land from the Indians we've been speaking English in it. Look where it's taken us. Why change things now?

Saying our national anthem in ANY language but English should be a felony punishable by hanging.

That's another thing wrong with America. The noose needs to come back. We gained our independence through hanging British tax collectors. They should be glorified and used more often than ineffective electric chairs or p ussy euthenisia wasting american tax dollars

If the framers our constitution saw the value of not having an "official" national language why cant we?
Ben Franklin noted at the time of the founding of our Constitution that there were enough German speaking people in the States to make that the official language German. Thank goodness Enlightenment thinking won the day and they realized market forces should dictate language not the government.
We've enjoyed our "monopoly" of business language for quite some time. However, any one living in the US at this point should realize that it is in their best interest to learn how to speak both English and Spanish.
Go to any northwestern European nation and you'll find a good portion of the pop there capable of speaking at least two languages. Why? Not because of some government requirement but because market forces dictate the necessity of it.
So I don't care who says we should have an "official language". That idea is just bad.

Hold on just a minute, there is a poll for this??? I would think it wouldn't even be a question. If someone wants to speak their language only in a county, they should be living in the country that speaks only that language. I have no problem with people of other countries wanting to live in the US, but when they want to change everything to their specifications is when I have a problem. Why does someone want so bad to be in a place and then change things about it? This is America, English is the OFFICIAL Language. Have mercy.

I am referring to the other % that aren't mentioned.

It means that the other 52 % better start learnin'!

I personally feel that English should be the official language. Here's why -

Who founded our nation? The French? The Chinese? The Spanish? No. THE BRITISH! For pete's sake, if American's go and visit other nations, we're expected to know enough of the language to communicate. And if we move there, it would be the courteous thing to do to learn the native language.

Immigrants leave their countries for a reason - whether it be willingly or not. If you are making your home in the US, you should learn the language. Period. End of discussion. I'm sick of dealing with people that have been US citizens for 20 flippin' years and STILL DON'T KNOW ENGLISH!

If English is not your native tongue and you want to still speak your native tongue, speak it at home or with your community if there is an ethnic community for you. But do NOT force the natural citizens of this country to learn YOUR language just because you don't want to learn ours.

End of rant. Thanks for reading.

My opinion is that I don't care.
English is already the "lingua franca" -- what is served by declaring it the "official" language? Nothing.
The poll reflects what immigrants have always known -- that to have the most success in America, they need to learn English. And like all other immigrants before them from everywhere, there are many that will try, some who won't try, and some who can't learn it even if they try for various reasons. That we, as a compassionate country that wants to make sure ALL of its people get good information, continue to make some government documents and services available in Spanish (and Vietnamese, and Tagalog, and a bunch of other languages) is our mark of being a country that values immigrants and the contributions they make.

I think the poll *might* also indicate that those idiot anti-immigrant folks running around screaming "they won't even learn English!" don't have a clue what immigrants really want...

I think it proves that the Hispanic population "gets" it more than the Liberals in DC do. They understand that anything worth having is worth working for, they do not want Americans to be inconvenienced by their presence. They understand that English is the language of this country and that success is more likely speaking English. The left would have you believe that to expect this from immigrants is unrealistic and that they are not capable of complying. The quickest way to improve performance of any kind is to simply raise the bar....

if GM doesn't like the test results for a certain car, they change the driver until they get the results they want. i'm not very trusting of polls. yet, this is America, and ENGLISH should have been declared the official language a llloooooonnngg time ago.

The official language IS English. Anyone moving here should want to learn it.

I am pro-immigrants and I keep saying it, we should have one language but not be forced to one language, English should be the Official Language but not the Mandatory language. and 100% respect for other languages and culture.

I am of Hispanic descent, but do not claim a country of origin other than America. This is my home and the home of my family for generations. I don’t know Spanish and it has never been pushed upon me to learn. I think who ever makes America their home from any other foreign speaking country should learn English. It’s only right, and they should expect such a request from Americans as they would request us to do the same if we decided to move to Poland or Latin America. And for those of you who don’t have a clue, the word “Hispanic” refers to all Latin countries, not just Mexico. Just shows you how ignorant Americans are, myself included.
