My 5 year old son was diagnosed with croupe 4 days ago. He still has the cough and the fever still comes and goes (when he's got a fever it's usually around 101 degrees). He is on Augmentin and the doctor also prescribed a strong cough syrup. I am just wondering how long it is supposed to last. He missed school today and may tomorrow.

Do you think it would be okay to send him to school tomorrow if he wakes up with no fever? (Even if his voice is a little hoarse) He was only supposed to be contagious for the first 24 hrs. Or so the doc said.

Croup is caused by a common cold virus, so it wouldn't be at all surprising for symptoms to last 5 days to 2 weeks.

I would imagine, though, that the fever and the crazy breathing/barking cough will be over sooner rather than later.

For some reason my kids get this nearly every year. They supposedly stop getting it as they get older but my 6 yr. old has had it again this year. For us, the fever and barking cough usually last about three days. The barking cough usually sounds better during the day and gets worse at night. After the fever and barking they still exhibit cold symptoms. I would say that if your son isn't running a fever he is okay to go to school but only if he is feeling up to it. You know how you feel when you're sick. He may be drained and tired. If the coughing keeps him up at night then he is not well rested. I wouldn't send him to school too soon. But you are with him daily and can judge his energy level. So, as long as the fever is gone, it is your call.

My son had it when he was 10 months old. He had it so bad that he had 3 treatments in the ER and ended up spending the night in the pediatric ward in a cold mist tent (try a cold humidifier at night). The next day he was having a good ol' time. He was only "affected" for that 24 hr and we were sent home with steroids. I also know that it depends on the child's immune system. I know that I love the OTC Robuttussin DM and you can probably give him Tylenol for the fever. But nothing beats the doctor advice. I hope he feels better!!!

My daughter has had it twice. Both times we had one really bad night and then 3-4 agerage coughing days/nights. Once the fever is gone he should be safe to go to school.

Seems to me it will run about a week however, personally I don't think much about augmentin for medication. Ask your Dr. for something better. You may also want to inquire about the use of a cool mist vaporizer for the child.
