I just spoke to a woman dachshund breeder who told me not to breed my two red dachshunds, because it will dull there color, and that I should get a black and brown dachshund to breed good colored coats??? Confused, because my vet never told me anything about red dachshund having any problems breeding? I have done some research about breeding my two dachshunds, and have not hears of this sort of problem? I would like to know if anyone has heard of this sort of thing with the dachshunds.... Thank You

Naw, the lady is crazy! My friend breeds reds to reds and WINS !
Perhaps her own lineage is weak in the color genes.

Random, all reckoning on genetics of the two dogs. presently rescued 3 puppies from an "unintentional" bybreeding of two b/t dachshunds. for sure the two had genes for dapple as 2 of the puppies have been dapples and one exchange right into a desirable black and tan. colour is the final ingredient you breed for, except you're a lower back backyard breeder attempting for "uncommon and unique", that's a piss damaging reason to reproduce any dogs.

You should contact your local breed club and talk with them about this - this way you are sure to get a correct answer. Or, talk with reputable breeders at the dog shows that you are showing in (you *are* showing these dogs, right? You aren't going to breed two non champion dogs, are you?). And remember, just because you have two purebred dogs does not mean that you should be breeding them. Get involved with the breed and learn how to be an ethical and resopnsible breeder before you undertake this. If you don't already know the answer to this question and you are turning to strangers on a non-dog specific website, then you seriously need to reconsider your plans and take some time to learn a little more.

Good luck to you. : )

maybe reds have a ressesive allele that causes this. Of course the vet probably wouldn't bring this up as it wouldn't really matter if you were breeding pets, but if your bredding show dogs, it's a another story.
Good luck

No there is no truth to this. Color depends on what is in the genes on both sides of the parents.

plz! just make sure the female is bigger than the male that you are breeding with... otherwise the puppies can be too big and you risk loosing your dog.
