Because they tend to flow like well water. Top shelf liquors take awhile to go empty.....but the cheap ones flow like well water.

There is a bin that sits around the edge of the bar on the inside - like where the ice is - that's called the well. That's why they are called well drinks - because the common and inexpensive alcohol lives there, handy for pouring standard drinks.

Shelf drinks are more expensive and are usually onlye used upon request. The top shelf is traditionally reserved for the most expensive liquors - hence "top shelf" being a term for the best.

Peace!

The well drinks are located very conveniently in the well for easy access. These liquors are used in a large variety of the drinks poured at the bar. Some bars have some well liquors loaded on the beverage gun or in bottles with pouring spouts.
The top shelf liquors are just that, placed high up for customer visibility and not readily accessible to the bartender.
All liquors make us feel 'well' but too much of a good thing and you feel the opposite.

It is because of the location that it is called this and also do greatly in part that they use only low...bran liquors..(shelf Liquor) not premium or top-shelf liquor...ex: instead of absolute or grey goose you would get majorska..etc

the area surrounding the bar to the inside (bartenders side) is where you place your empty bottle or glass and is called the well...the "well brands" are the brands that are more popularly called upon because at certain times they are on "special" (usually happy hour) and are generally overall less expensive...they are kept right behind the bar close to the well
