I rarely get my hair cut. Today I went to a nice cozy little salon and the girl washed and trimmed my hair. She also blowdried it and used a flat iron.
The price was $30 and I left a $5 tip. I am beginning to think I didn't tip enough? Should I have left more? What is the normal tip amount at a salon?

A "normal" tip is 15-20% at a salon. You left 16.67% which is fine.
Tipping is a way of telling the person that you liked the job they did, and appreciate their efforts. Even though many places have silly tipping signs, like "Tipping is not a city in China" you shouldn't give a tip unless you want to. Once you get a regular stylist, then you should be tipping a bit more. Until then, a $5 tip for a $30 bill is fine.

$5 was a good tip- it realy depends on how good the hair cut was, did you like it? Did the salon person do a good job? Would you want to go to this place again? Ask these question and if you liked everything leave about a $5-$10 tip

I always leave a $5 tip, usually you are supposed to tip between 10-15% but if you are strapped for cash do what you can. It's called a tip-which means you can leave as little or as much as you want, it's at your discretion.

My mom is a Hair Stylist and I worked for a while at her shop. Most people gave her the tip directly after they paid, or they gave it to her when she was done. It isn't unusual to give the tip to the cashier to give to the stylist (that was a mouthful, lol) though. It happened at least a couple of times. If you do give it to the cashier make sure you know the stylists name!
