My dad was a UK citizen at one time and now he is a US citizen. I would like to get a UK passport and I know I can do this through him, but I'm not exactly sure how and have had trouble finding info on it on the web. Can anyone help? Thanks

The date you need to bear in mind is 01/01/83. If you were born before this date and your dad was British at that time, then you may qualify. You will have to show documents and photos and will probably have to be interviewed.
If you were born after 01/01/83, you can get British nationality through the maternal line ie mother - or father if he was married to your mother - your mother must have been British at the time of your birth.
You also need to check if your father renounced his British nationality or is a dual national. Good Luck!

Does your dad have a dual citizenship? if he does, then he may apply for either Passport. If you were born in the US, then you are a US citizen, and can only apply for a US passport, or you can immigrate to the UK, and go through their visa requirements, and apply for a dual citizenship. It is not so easy, ask your dad.

you need to contact your local british consulate and ask them to send you the right form for application. if you can't get through by phone, look the email up on the internet... you are likely to get a quicker response.

the key point is going to be if your father was actually born in the UK. if he was, then it will be straight forward, and you would need to get a copy of his birth certicate.... the consulate will only accept official copies send from the archives (you can order over the internet), either that or you will need the original (you do get it back quickly)

if on the other hand if your father wasn't born in the UK, you will be applying through your grand parents birth right. however, i suspect that you have to be under one year old to be eligable. this you will definately need to speak to you consulate about.

It relies upon you may qualify for duel nationality, yet you're actually not a British citizen except you reside interior the united kingdom for no less than 5 years and stick to for citizenship, infants of British voters who stay in another country are actually not British voters themselves.
