I remember reading when I was in school that your tastebuds actually change every 7-14 days. I don't think they can actually be "gone" but maybe if your not tasting anything it's more of a neurological or sensory issue.

It means that you cannot taste flavors, only texture. That is a sad condition, but hardly on the order of losing sight or hearing. I know of a young lady that was in an auto accident and suffered some brain damage. The only permanent damage was that she can no longer taste.
She no longer has favorite foods and must force herself to eat, but otherwise suffers no ill effects.
