If you are going to a big city like Bangkok or Phuket don't take too much cash- you'll need some to get from the airport to wherever you are going though.
The dollar is pretty strong against the Baht, so you will do well to use an ATM in Thailand. BofA charged me more to buy a bunch of Baht here than they did at the ATM in Thailand.
If you are going to a more rural area, you will probably need to take more money with you (whatever you are going to need)
Also, although you didn't ask, if you plan to go to Cambodia (I made a side trip to see Angkor Wat), you will want to bring a bunch of US dollars. The money in Cambodia fluctuates so much in value, that most of the places only deal in US dollars.

You will waste your money on cashing travellers checks. Best is to bring some cash for change at the airport and then get what you need from the atms. Super convenient.

atm card and a few thousand baht in your pocket is all you need. the rate of return is better, you pay no exchange fee or tax.
