I have 12 dogs, none of them begs when I'm eating. They KNOW I'm not going to give them anything, so they don't bother.

When we go visiting a particular friend's house, they are horrible beggars, because they know it will get them results. But they still don't bother begging from me, only from my friends.

Don't feed them from the table....ever. Don't allow them to be obnoxious and bother you when you're eating. Eventually the behavior will extinguish itself.

Failing that, put them elsewhere in the house while you are eating.

First is to avoid at all cost giving him people food. Once he starts getting table scraps from the table he will expect more. Second, create a line for him to avoid crossing while you are eating at the table. For instance I use the line where my kitchen transitions into the dining room (tile to carpet). When the dog remains behind this line I give him a cookie or dog treat. He then learns when he stays behind this line he is a good boy. After some practice of this without food, try it during dinner time. Reward the dog for remaining "behind the line" and soon he will just stay away. Remember this only works if you do not feed him table scraps. If you really want to give him some after, wait until you have cleared the table then put the food in his bowl, do not feed directly from your plate.

Good luck, I'd love to know the answer to this one. We adopted our puppy when she was only 3 months old and she learned to beg right away, even though we never give her scraps! All I can say is be strong! Don't cave in to the sad, poor me, eyes! lol. If our dog is being really persistant about the begging and getting under our feet we'll put her in her crate while we eat and let her out when we're done. Hope that helps!

Try feeding him the same time you eat.
Or one of my favorite training tools is a spray bottle with water and whenever they do something they shouldn't I spray them in the face and say NO!! Soon I just have pick up the spray bottle and show it to them and they will stop what they are doing.
Whatever you do...do not ever feed them at the table. Even if you want to give them some leftovers. Take it away from the table and put it in their food bowl.
Good luck

I can tell you how to stop the begging in 3 simple steps.

1. Kick the hell of of your dogs when they beg for food ( if they've already been fed that day. If not , they have legitimate issue with you. )

2.Then throw their *** out of the house ( or up against the wall )until you finish eating.

3.Repeat step 1 and 2 if necessary. They'll soon learn.

Rule #1 -NEVER feed your dog from the table.

Infact, the dog should not be allowed to sit near you, or stare at you when you are eating.

Do be clear, about what you want the dog to do.

When we eat, at the table, or sometimes on the couch, the dog has to go to her "doggiebed" (in the corner of the room.) She has to "lay down," and "stay."

It took a little while to train this, I never punished her mistakes, just put her back in position until she learned to stay until I released her.

If you do want to share your food, reward her after you've eaten, for being good.

I have beggers also because we do feed our dogs scraps (after dinner is over we put left overs in their bowls). I can tell you though that the best way we've found to stop the begging is to tell them to get in their beds while we're at the table. They can still see us, but are in the family room as opposed to being in the kitchen with us. We give them each a rawhide to keep them occupied. It works for us because rawhides are a huge treat. (We don't leave rawhide out while we're not home to prevent any fighting.) They also know they are going to get a treat when we're finished eating if they stayed in their beds.

The best thing I learned with my 2 labs is to make them sit, or lay down while I'm eating. They can stair at me all they want, I just egnore them.

If they try to beg, get up, or nip something off the table, we tell them firmly 'no' and make them lay down again.

I have tought them hand signals (my hand flat, palm down and make motion that you are pushing something down means 'lay down') so that if I'm eating and need to tell them to lay down, I don't have to talk with my mouth full. It took a while of saying 'down' while doing the signal, but it works well now.

If they do try to get something from the table we send them to their 'bad girl mat' which is just the mat at our back door. They have to sit there until I release them. Now when I say 'on the mat' and 'stay' they know that I mean business, and will stay until I release them.

This has saved us from many almost-embarrasing moments when we have guests over.

Good Luck!!

Well, I have three dogs and they used to do the same things. Try this:

♥Feed them at the same time you eat

♥Put them outside or in thier kennel cage when you eat

♥Ignore them and turn on music or the tv

♥Give them, a chew-toy or a bone BEFORE you eat

And whatever you do, do not give them leftovers!

As others have said, NEVER give in to the begging.

Ever.

Sometime when you're not eating, teach "go lie down" and "stay."

From then on, when he begs, give the go lie down command (use a deep voice, and gesture, both when you train and when you use the command).

If you teach him to go lie down, and never feed him while you're eating, he should respond.

He may always beg, but as soon as you notice, make him go lie down.

Consistency.
