Ok, here's some Scripture:

1 Cor 4:14-16: "I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. I urge you, then, to be imitators of me."

St. Paul, one of the leaders in the Church, is calling himself 'father' and telling Christians to imitate him. If that was wrong, he would definitely know.

Acts 7:2 (Stephen, first Christian Martyr): And Stephen said: "Brethren and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, and said to him, 'Depart from your land and from your kindred and go into the land which I will show you.' "

Again, a Christian calls someone 'father'. Also check out Acts 21:40, 22:1; Rom 4:16-17; 1 Jn 2:13, 14. All the same. And as someone said, we should not be calling anyone "Dad" if that's what Jesus meant.

If we take Matthew 23:9 literally we wouldn't call our earthly fathers, fathers either.

Priests are called father because they play the role of a father to their congregation.

They pick and choose what they want to obey from the Bible. If they had their way, the Church would still keep the Bible from being translated into the languages of the common people so no one would understand that the Church is wrong on so many other things.

So Jesus never called Mary 'Mother' and Joseph 'Father'?

There's much more to the passage than is understood in the English. Go back to the original sources. Or look it up in the Catechism, there's an explaination for it in there.

Oh shoot! I always have these discussions with my friends! To tell you the truth, the Catholic church does many things that are clearly against God's word, especially as far as traditions. God wants his church to be led by the holy spirit and not by man made traditions and nonsense like that.

They obviously don't read the Bible even though they're constantly trying to shove it down everyone elses' throats. I've read the Bible - several times, in fact, and I, as a nonbeliever, know more about it than most believers. Ironic, isn't it?

My uneducated guess would be that the way to get thru to God was thru a man....this man took upon himself the mantle Father, as to be able to listen and not blaspheme
