they claim that red wine is good for you in moderation. drinking a glass of red wine a day has shown to reduce the affects of COPD (a disease causing inflammation in the lungs and reduced breating capacity) by reducing the swelling. can help fight cancer, prevent and reduce the affects of colds, and may someday hold the cure for herpes (no joke, its being investigated now). also the polyphenols in wine reduce the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries.

Red wine is made by using the skins of the grapes, whereas most white wines , but not expensive chardonnay based wines, are made using only the juice . The grape skin is a rich source of polyphenols , a chemical class of substances with positive health characteristics, one of which is called resveratrol. This has excellent antioxidant potential and has been researched for well over a decade for its cardiac benefits. Recently red wine has also been shown to have great potential in protecting against stroke and "The more red wine men drank, the lower the risk for stroke." May not hold true for women since it has not been researched using women volunteers to any great degree, though it is known to be beneficial in small quantities (1 glass) from limited studies.

It now seems clear that regular consumption of up to 1-2 drinks a day (1 standard drink is approximately equal to 5 oz, or 125 ml, of 13% wine) does reduce mortality, due to a 10%–40% lower risk of coronary heart disease, especially for those over the age of 35 or so
Recent studies show that only red wine reduces the risk of contracting several types of cancer
Sulfites (or sulphites) are chemicals that occur naturally in grapes and also are added to wine as a preservative. They can trigger a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction in a small percentage of consumers, primarily asthmatics.

New research suggests that red wine may prevent lung cancer in men, and that the protective effects increase in proportion to the amount of wine consumed. No other type of alcohol seemed to have the same effect, according to the study, which has been published in Thorax.

Red wines contain antioxidants and other chemical compounds that provide health benefits, such as reduced chances for heart disease. However, drink in moderation - one glass per day for women and one to two glasses per day for men - or else the benefits offered by the wine are offset by the increased amount of alcohol.

You would have to drink the equivalent of 1500 bottles a day to get the benefits the media is reporting (based on the study with mice) so it's irrelevant!
