I have recently adopted a 3 legged dog from the humane society. Duke was born with a withered back leg. That doesn't matter in the slightest to me, he is still a great dog and companion for me. He has a great temperement and adjusted well to living with me. My friend was ripping on me and Duke, saying only 4 legged dogs are worth anything basically. She calls him a crippled dog, and he isn't crippled in my eyes, he could out run her flea bitten mutt any day of the week. She says this is from inbreeding. I say not every 3 legged dog is inbred. With a lot of encouragement and praise, I helped him to get up and down the stairs and now he just races up and down them. I can tell Duke is proud of himself and I am proud of him. So why are some people like that? 3 legs or not, that doesn't make him any less of a dog, and he deserved a good and loving home and he got one.

3 legs rarely has to do with inbreeding. At birth, it's usually something to do with a problem in the womb - like an umbilical cord wrapped around the leg and cut off the blood supply to it. It's typically not a genetic defect, it's a problem in utero.

Any friend who would rip on you for being sensitive and caring is not really a friend. She sounds like either a know-it-all or someone who is insecure in their beliefs and feels the need to pontificate to all others about her "knowledge." If she pops off again about it, it may be time to stand up, shake her hand, thank her for meeting up with you, and excuse yourself. And never return her calls. Friends don't try to make each other angry. "Friends" who do aren't really worth the time.

I would say that this person is really not your friend. Just because a dog has 1 less leg, does not make him any less of a dog. I am really glad that you adopted him. You sound like exactly what he needed - A Loving Home! I think you need to tell your "friend" to stop making fun of Duke. Sounds like Duke has a much better personality that this friend. LIke the others have said, I think this person just needs to pick on him to make themselves feel good. If only all people could be as nice as dogs are.

You love Duke and Duke loves you and that is all that matters. If she were in your shoes with her dog she would feel the same way you do.(hopefully) People are uncomfortable around anything that is not "normal" in our society and that is so sad. Maybe her mouth is the only way she can cope with not having enough love for all of Gods creatures. You just keep on loving and caring for your baby and you will receive the greatest loyalty back from him known to mankind.

Sounds like this person isn't really a friend at all. Some people are just mean and snooty when it comes to things like this. Sounds like Duke got the perfect home full of love. There should be more people like you in this world. Pups like Duke get "thrown away" every day when all they need is love and guidence. Just like a child.
I found this website for you to check out with Duke. Sounds like he's already adjusted quite well with his bumb leg. But it still might be interesting to check out this site.

Congratulations! You deserve a huge pat on the back for both looking past steriotypes and adopting from a shelter. I wish you and Duke a long and happy life together.
As for your friend, she is very shallow. I think if I was in the same situation, I would ask her not to come around again until she had something nice to say about my dog.

People are just mean. They don't care what the dog is like personallity wise all they care is about what it looks like, how much is costs. A 3 legged dog can run and play just as good as a 4 legged one. But people think that if a dog had a defect it isn't worth anything. Don't listen to what people say and tell him to f*** off. Have fun with your dog and don't let other people get to you.

What's funny is that her comments don't affect Duke at all. He has his own agenda. Animals are surprisingly capable of overcoming handicaps, like the dog that walks on two hind legs when it's front legs are gone.
BTW, I've had a friend with a 3 legged dog. His name was Tripod.

Good for you and Duke! Maybe you need more 3 legged friends instead of your mean human one. (Joke) Just keep your head up and continue working with Duke and be proud of him and yourself! The world needs more people like you.

some people are so shallow about all things in life including the newest fad in dogs...It doesn't matter what your dog looks like to the outside world, he is your best friend and you should be very proud of rescuing this guy. I have a poodle mix and she is definitely no beauty as the world would perceive beauty. She has very thin hair and everyone says she is the ugliest dog they have ever seen....but they don't know this sweet wonderful, and loving companion she is....beauty is in the eye.......
