My dream is to play marching snare in college. I'm in high school marching band, but I don't play percussion. I own a snare drum, and try to practice at home. However, I'm not sure what to practice that would prepare me to audition for marching. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would start out by learning all your rudiments. You can find a lot of these online. I recommend this site:

This should give you something to work on for a while. Best of all, it's free.

Check out the N.A.R.D. book and George Stone stick control. They should get your hands going. Mark Wessels A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum is also a great book.

If you want to skip the basics and go straight to the marching, a good beginner book is Thom Hannum's Championship Concepts for Marching Workbook.
