I agree with Mr Sceptic. I am a single mum with 2 kids and I have to find work which fits in with my kids. I did not have a choice what I did, all that was available for me was night work in a care home. It stinks that people have the choice weather they work or not and all because the government give them a wage which the rest of us have to pay for! I earn a living doing what alot of people turn their noses up at, I look after mentally ill elderly people who are doubly incontinent 3 nights a week. No its not what i choose to do but i have no choice. Yes we should make them who can work, take what ever work they can do. No work, no money.. we reap what we sew

That completely depends! Anybody who doesn't work, is automatically labelled as 'work shy'. This is not the case sometimes, and many have a genuine reason preventing them from working, IE health, family commitments and many more! As for the people who choose not to work, purely due to laziness, then the answer is of course yes!

The questioner is right - there are too many people living on benefits who could work. It needs government investment in social projects to get many of these people off benefits and into work. It would not be difficult to reduce benefits to people who persistently refuse suitable work and those who repeatedly fail in jobs through lateness, absenteeism etc.

Problem is that too many of these layabouts have families to support - if we cut their benefits it will be the families who suffer.

In another of your questions you claim to be living happily on welfare without working. Are you so desperate to make your point that you're not even honest with people?

Well you could try (see Job seekers' allowance) but I suspect there will be a hardcore group that will resist all efforts.

Yes. They should be made to do worthwile things instead of eating crisps and watching Jeremy Kyle.

How would you, in practice, define work-shy?
Certainly they should be offered work until such time as it is proved that they are incapable.
But it is not as simpl as it sounds.

You can't force them but you can encourage them. It would be fine encouraging them to work. It pays.
