I remember hearing somewhere that muhammad's philosophy on war (that is, when he was confronted by adversaries such as the Quraysh) was first to hide, then to run, and then to fight if the above two were impractical.

I remember hearing this somewhere, but I don't remember where. Does anyone esle know if this is just my imagination or if it's written down somewhere?

Yes, I'm sorry I didn't capitalize his name, I was typing fast and normally I do capitalize all names. Where was it recorded that he said this?

I'm a Muslim and I have never heard of this.

What I know is that "Persecution is worse than murder", and that's a reason why Islam says war can be permissible in the last option.

Firstly please spell his name with a capital M .. at least it is respectful (no I am not a Muslim - but respect is due to all religions and their founders)
And yes, you're right he has been recorded as saying that .. however the literal translation would be closer to Churchill's expression that "It is better to Jaw, Jaw, than to War, War"
something our politicians and leaders seem to have forgotten
