Most people answered that it would be impolite to send a Christmas card to a Jew, Muslim, or Atheist: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Au3mPSYgjXINV6fXtmKZbrPsy6IX?qid=20061118215741AAkaRj7

Wouldn't it be just as impolite to wish them a "Merry Christmas" in person?

Thank you for your input.

Sometimes, "Politeness" and " Politics " are easily confuse. If Jew walked up to you and said " Happy Hanuka " (or what ever) would you be offended? I wouldn't. It was a positive greeting. Now if a Jew were to spray-paint it on the side of a Christian church, that would be a different story. It's all in the intent.

When dealing with cultures I know little about, I usually go with the " Nod and Smile " technique. It's simple, universal, with not political or religious undertones.

In our culture, no. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas. It shouldn't bother them if they live here in the USA. It is part and parcel with our culture. In fact, I go into the stores where they employees are told not to wish anyone a Merry Christmas. They are told to say, "Happy holidays." Well, I wish them a "Merry Christmas" in return. Most then whisper to me, "Merry Christmas!"

I just say Happy Holidays. That way no matter what it is they celebrate, they know I'm wishing them a happy one. :) It would be like a Hebrew or Messianic wishing everyone a Happy Hanukkah...you'd be like "oh, that's sweet, but I don't celebrate Hanukkah" So I don't see it as impolite, but perhaps not applicable? Best wishes!
