No, it is not illegal as long as a vet does it. Many people will tell you that it is inhumane and cruel. Tails were docked longer ago on the hunting dogs so they didn't get in the way while in wooded areas. Most tails are docked today for the "look". However, I have heard cases supporting docking, such as some breeds are not used to the long tail and because of that have broken it. It really all depends on who you talk to and if they are for or against it. All 3 of my dogs have their tails docked (2 cockers, 1 min pin). I had no choice in the matter since all had them done at a very young age. Not sure if I would have had them done if it were up to me. I love the look, but not sure if I would have been able to make that decision. My min pin does not have her ears cropped though. That decision was up to me and I was against it. If you do decide to dock the tail, please make sure it is done at a young age. If you are still not sure, just research the pro's and con's and then decide.

Why do some people decide to circumcise their infant boys? in the previous, working breeds that had docked tails, it exchange into safer for them. It enables preclude an harm, etc. additionally some underground dogs, in general terrier breeds, have been docked so the hunter ought to apply them as a glance after to p.c.. them up from the floor. In historic Egypt the people used to perception that a dogs with a shorter/"no tail" could not get rabies. it is unfaithful of direction besides the undeniable fact that it exchange right into a perception a protracted long long long long long term in the past. those days its to conform to the breed time-honored and instruct. some breeds, like the rat terrier, that require a docked tail, some are definitely born with a bobbed tail( certainly short). some people won't be in a position to tell the version between a organic bobbed tail or a docked tail so do not bypass off to assume that a dogs with a "docked tail" had its tail decrease off while it exchange right into a newborn. i've got had dogs with the two organic bobs and a few with docked tails. i think of its humane while its performed properly by utilising a veterinarian/expert on the spectacular age. it relatively is not humane while its performed as an grownup and/or by utilising only performed by utilising all and numerous without adventure in the difficulty

It's not illegal, but some vets will not do this as it's generally considered inhumane in the veterinary community. I used to be a vet tech, and I've seen the process done before. The puppies usually aren't anethestetized (depending on how old they are), as the process only takes a couple of minutes, and it does cause them pain. I personally don't believe in altering an animal's natural state just to suit a human's eyes, you should take them just as they were made or not at all.

The reason dogs tails started being cropped years ago was because of the work or purpose of the dog. If the dog was going to be in the thicketts then it was easier on the dog and the owner etc. There is very few reasons today to have a dogs tail cropped other than it is the appearance you want. I just dont think that is a good enough reason. Love the whole dog. One of the best looking dogs I ever saw was a boxer with a tail.

It's very hard on an older pup to
have this done.
Tail docking are normally
done 3-5 days after birth.
Maybe it would be better to find a breeder
who will have a litter due and ask to have the docking done in that 3-5 day time period.
I do know some Vets will not dock an older pups tail.

No, it is not illegal. But you will find that the majority will tell you that it is inhumane. Some vet's won't allow that or docking ears at their practice because they refuse to support it. Usually, the only supports you will find are those who show the breed or use it for a hunting dog and it serves a practical purpose (which most still do not agree with).

Many US breeds are supposed to have stub tails. The orgin of the cutting of the tail goes back when they used to have a tax on the length of the dogs tail. So owners started to cut them off as pups so they would pay less taxes.. In the US it is not aginst the law.

Docking is not illegal in the US, alot of breeds are done that way as newborn pups - rottweilers, pitbulls, etc. It is however cruel!

I don't think its illegal, depends on the age of the puppy. I don't think I would ever do it. Causes communication problems in dogs, and it hurts them.
