It was in Sienna (Italy). I was with my boyfriend which made the ice cream even more beautiful. Italian ice cream is the best one in the world.

I have tried a lot lot lot of ice cream.

I really love Graeter's Ice Cream shops in Cincinnati, OH. They have this electric pink syrup called "nectar" which is kind of almondy-tasting. They also make a yummy coconut ice cream, and used to make Almond macaroon...they changed the name to amaretto crunch, I think, but it is still great. They by far have the best vanilla milkshake in the country.

Other than that, I absolutely love Haagen Dazs (at the grocery).
They put out these limited run flavors around this time of year. They are always fantastic. A few years they came out with German Chocolate, which I still can't find anything that compares.
This year they made "Sticky toffee pudding". Oh WOW.
My husband and I usually buy plain vanilla or Creme brulee, which is good if you love the taste of burnt sugar.

Otherwise, Ben&Jerry's is a good old standby for us.

My Uncle Ralph's back porch, on a hot August night in 1965 (I was 10). It was peach ice cream.

We gathered about 2 dozen eggs still warm from the chickens, so you know they were fresh. My aunt made an ice cream base with whole cream, fresh milk, the blanched, peeled and seeded bushel of peaches we picked that morning and used her huge pressure cooker on low to "mush" the peaches and get it all ready.

We fired up 4 electric ice cream churns, and us kids maintained the ice and salt. It took forever. Those motors groaning away, the ice crashing on the cylinders, the dashers slowly making circuit after circuit...

But it was worth it...

You cannot imagine the richness, smoothness, deep, fresh flavor, light orangy color, and taste of that wonderful bowlful. I can still see the little turquoise and coral flowers on the side of the bowl and my sister moaning at her first brainfreeze... The best.

Dang! Now I'm hungry!

The best ice cream I can remember was some homemade vanilla ice cream made in one of those hand-cranked ice cream makers when I was about 8 or 9 years old... no store bought ice cream even comes close...

Cold stone creamery. Any of their flavors are great! But Rocky Road is the best!
