I believe there is enough evidence that the baby has a lot of pain.

No, it's very painful. Usually they rip the baby apart and pull him out in pieces. If it's a partial birth abortion, they pull all but his head out of the woman and jab a pair of scissors in the back of the baby's skull then vaccum his brains out. There is a film made by a doctor who stopped being an abortionist. It is called the "Silent Scream" in it you can see the baby turning away from the forceps trying to get away, then you can see the baby open his little mouth to scream when the forceps rip his arm off. It's horrible.

Actually, the fetus' nervous system starts developing in the early stages of pregnancy. However, the fetus' cortex hasn't sufficiently developed until at least the 20th week of pregnancy for it to feel any pain and most abortions are performed well before the 20th week. The fetus before this time is capable of nervous reactions similar to spontaneous nervous reactions in a quadriplegic, but is not yet capable of feeling pain. So, the reactions are present, just not yet hooked up to the pain centre.

So, someone asks about the physical effects of abortion and then the religious choose to answer with religion instead of fact.

Here's an idea, if you're not willing to answer with fact to a fact based question, then don't bring up religion.

Now, as to the answer to the question... it depends how far along the gestation is and what form of abortion is used.

The problem is that opponents of abortion completely dismiss the non-painful ways and obssess on the most painful ones they can find.

The Bible never specifically addresses the issue of abortion. However, there are numerous teachings in Scripture that make it abundantly clear what God’s view of abortion is. Jeremiah 1:5 tells us that God knows us before He knits us in the womb. Psalm 139:13-16 speaks of God’s active role in our creation and formation in the womb. Exodus 21:22-25 prescribes the same penalty for someone who causes the death of a baby in the womb as the penalty for someone who commits murder. This clearly indicates that God considers a baby in the womb as just as much of a human being as a full-grown adult. For the Christian, abortion is not a matter of a woman’s right to choose. It is a matter of the life or death of a human being made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:6).

The first argument that always arises against the Christian stance on abortion is, “What about cases of rape and/or incest?” As horrible as it would be to become pregnant as a result of rape and/or incest, does that make the murder of a baby the answer? Two wrongs do not make a right. The child who is a result of rape/incest could be given up for adoption to a loving family unable to have children on their own – or the child could be raised by its mother. Again, the baby should not be punished for the evil acts of its father.

The second argument that usually arises against the Christian stance on abortion is, “What about when the life of the mother is at risk?” Honestly, this is the most difficult question to answer on the issue of abortion. First, let’s remember that this situation is the reason behind less than one-tenth of one percent of the abortions done in the world today. Far more women have an abortion because they do not want to “ruin their body” than women who have an abortion to save their own lives. Second, let’s remember that God is a God of miracles. He can preserve the life of a mother and a child despite all the medical odds being against it. Ultimately, though, this question can only be decided between a husband, wife, and God. Any couple facing this extremely difficult situation should pray to the Lord for wisdom (James 1:5) as to what He would have them to do.

In 99% of the abortions performed in the world today, the reason is “retroactive birth control.” A woman and/or her partner decide they do not want the baby they have conceived. So, they decide to end the life of their child instead of dealing with the responsibility. This is an utmost evil. Even in the more difficult 1% of instances, abortion should never be the first option. The life of a human being in the womb is worth every effort to allow a full-term birthing process.

For those who have had an abortion – the sin of abortion is no less forgivable than any other sin. Through faith in Christ, any and all sins can be forgiven (John 3:16; Romans 8:1; Colossians 1:14). A woman who has had an abortion, or a man who has encouraged an abortion, or even a doctor who has performed one – all can be forgiven by faith in Jesus Christ.

Medical fact, premature babies, born at under 5 months gestation, have sensitivity to touch, never endings fire, and the slightest touch is painful.

A saline abortion, or a D&C can be performed up to 5 months gestation. A saline solution is injected to "burn" the fetus to death. A D&C scrapes the fetus, and placenta from the uterine wall, causing the abortion.

What do you think? No, pain meds are administered only to the mother. Nothing to numb the pain is given to the fetus. Abotion is barbaric.

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THAT ABORTION STOPS A BEATING HEART. WELL IT DOES HURT THE BABY IF YOUR HEART STOPPED BEATING IT WOULD HURT YOU. I AM TOTALLY AGAINST ABORTION. ONCE YOU HAVE A BABY LIVING IN YOU IT FEELS EVERYTHING. YOU HAVE GOT TO THINK ABOUT IT IF SOMEONE IS GROWING INSIDE OF YOU YOU KNOW THEY FEEL EVERYTHING INSIDE OF THEM EVEN IF THEY DRUG THE BABY UP IT IS STILL HURTING THE BABY IN EVERY WAY, GOD WOULD NOT WANT ABORTION TO TAKE PLACE THAT'S A GIFT HE GAVE YOU FROM HIM TAKE IT AND RECEIVE IT AND BE BLESSED.

That' like saying if I kill someone and it doesn't hurt is that OK. Or if I slaughter an animal and it doesn't hurt them then is that OK. No it's killing that is the most important thing to understand. Killing is not our job. Let the animals kill their young but humans are responsible for their actions otherwise they will have to be an animal in their next life if their conscience is like an animal..

The Journal of American Medical Association published a review of the current studies into fetal pain and determined that it is not possible for a fetus to feel pain until after 23 weeks. A fetus or embryo (before 10 weeks is classified as embryo, after 10 weeks is a fetus) needs three things before it can experience pain. 1) pain receptors 2) a nervous system that links the pain receptors to the brain 3) a brain developed enough to interpret the signals. These things are not in place according to the majority medical opinion until after 23 weeks. 98% of abortions are by the first trimester so well before 14 weeks. Later term abortions which are mainly done for major birth defects can utilize pain killer, it is a decision the physcian makes.

Pro-life groups have been claiming fetus feel pain sooner. They say the JAMA study is biased since the researchers involved themselves have done abortions. My take on this is that many OB/GYNs have been involved in abortions but that it seems unlikely to me they would lie about the data. OB/GYNs make perfectly good livings delivery babies and taking care of women's reproductive health. They are not as financially invested in abortion as the pro-lifers project.

* You are going to get a lot emotional rhetoric and grossly false medical assertions asking this on Yahoo's religion section. I would go to a reputable medical site or even just call a real ob/gyns office and ask. They will talk to you. The pro-life sites give false information and also group all abortion at all stages together.
