That sounds like the non contagious, Demodectic mange..Which is actually an immune system problem..
this is an excellent product to strengthen his immune system, and hopefully will help him to fight this, and get rid of it> http://springtimeinc.com/product/88/2

If the dog develops mange then the only treatment that really works comes from your vet. Depending on the kind of mange the treatment is internal as well as external. OMG when I answered this question I was thinking some idiot would claim that gas or motor oil would help and low and behold someone did. DO NOT use either of these on your dog, it is a old wives tell and it is dangerous, just the fumes could casue serious damage

Take your pooch to the vet. He will need to do an exam on him. He will also need antibiotics to take ( not the doctor, the dog). You dont want to use motor oil. This will cause cancer in your dog. It may seemed at one time, many years ago to use motor oil on an outside dog, but these days No. I have a Jack Russell that has mange, or I should say did. He no longer has it. He had a type 1 mange. There are a few types of mange. Please take your doogy to the vet. In the long run, your dog will feel better, and you will not have to hear and see doggy scratch and have a stinky smell.

Mange MUST be treated by your vet. It is not unusual for the hair regrowth to be very slow, but if you are in any way unsure then you must go back to the vet. Mange is highly contagious and can kill a small or weak dog. Some types of mange are also transmissible to humans. There is no way to treat mange yourself - you have to seek vet treatment.

Get a medicated shampoo use twice a week, some antibiotics and steroids will also do wonders. this may be a reaction to a flea bite so an insectide like "spot on" may also help. I must say i only ever heard of dogs and cats with this problem, perhaps a doctor may be needed tee hee.

There are different kinds of mange. I could probably get you some web sites, but your best advised to get your information from your vet. Diagnosing the type of mange requires skin scrapings and a look under a microscope. The treatment differs, depending on the type of mange. There is a type of mange that is incurable and takes lifelong treatment to control. The only one who can tell you what type of mange you dog has is your vet.

I had a dog with mange at one time growing up and not so long ago. My family did nontraditional methods and bathed the dog in motor oil, no joke(be careful not to get it around its head) and it cleared it up.

The recent one took various trips to the vet and numerous medications. Took several different types of dips to clear it up. Consult your vet and if you don't like the answer he gives you, get a second opinion.

I would say that you need to take him back to the vet and see what he hhas to say. I figure since it hasn't cleared up by now ther is something else wrong
