Lately it seems like the cheapest places to buy airline tickets are from the actual airline website itself... however, sometimes you can find cheaper deals on discount airfare websites... check out hotwire.com, cheaptickets.com, studentuniverse.com (if you are a college student), expedia.com... or you can go to kayak.com, and it well check all of these sites for you and tell you what the cheapest place to buy your tickets are.
Also, it can make a big difference what dates you are travelling...Even departing or returning a day later or earlier can change the price significantly, so search all your options.
I reccommend kayak.com... it will search direct airline websites (united airlines... nw airlines... etc), as well as discount websites... and give you the result all in one spot.
If you're Ebay savvy, try typing in "airline voucher" or "ecert" for different airlines. Airlines offer free vouchers for passengers for many different reasons, and some people sell them on Ebay to get the cash for it. Depending on where you're flying to and from, you can usually get a ticket for 200 dollars with the discount.

First start with the online "aggregators" (they combine hundreds of travel sites into 1 search):

kayak.com
farechase.com

This gives you a good idea of where the market price should be.

Then visit:

expedia.com since they do NOT display their fares on aggregators such as kayak or farechase.

Last but not least check out consolidators such as (will save you hundreds, especially when flying to Europe):

Flights.com
Onetravel.com

Hope this helps, good luck.
