Some people claim that some Toyotas and Hondas are more American than a Chevy or Ford. My gut feeling is that GM or Ford would be better off with my money than a foreign company, is this flawed?

Toyota and Honda are probably built with more Americans than Ford or GM these days, however , the profit from the sale will go over seas. So, its a catch -22. If you buy a Ford or GM, your supporting Mexican, Canadian, or Australian labor, but the profit will go to Dearborn, MI.

If you buy Honda or Toyota, you support American builders, but the profit goes to Tokyo, Japan.

The question is- which is the lessor of 2 evils?

Ford and GM have both been allocating jobs to other countries , whereas Toyota and Honda have been moving jobs here.

The choice....is yours.

I have never owned anything but Ford or Chevy vehicles, and I never would. Not because of where they are made, but because of the fact that they have proven to be safe, reliable vehicles every time. And comfortable, which IS because they are American, I think. Not much in the way of leg room (or any other kind) in a Toyota or Honda. And my '99 Tahoe runs great, never had a problem w/it, as was the case w/last truck, a '01 F-150. Or the '99 and'01 Rangers previous to those...My friends '96 4Runner is alwys giving her trouble or needing repairs. But I never have owned a "car" car, just trucks and suv's. So maybe a, say, Honda Accord, is better than a comparable American made car. I say go w/what feels right to YOU, cause you have to get in it every day, whatever you decide to purchase. Also, any body work or repairs you DO need are way cheaper on a Chevy than on a VW or other foreign brand.

Yes your thinking is flawed. First of all there are more plants being built in North America by companies like Toyota and Honda where the big 3 especially GM and Ford are closing them down. Most car parts are either built in North America or China, Mexico regardless of the Car Manufacturer. There is no such thing as a Domestic car anymore, just domestic management.
Your neighbour may work in a Car plant owned by a foreign manufacturer. Do your homework and pick the best car for you regardless what others say or feel. Get your money's worth

If you feel like making a donation, there are thousands of better charities to send your hard earned money too.

The Big 3 have put themselves in the position they are in by focusing on high profit margin vehicles like trucks and suv's. It's their fault.

IOW, don't buy a domestic because you are feeling charitable. Spend your money with the product that is going to return the best bang for the buck. By doing so, you are encouraging the Big 3 to make a better product which will, in time, force them to create a better product which will allow them to compete better in 10 years. If you buy now, and allow them to keep making the slop they make, you don't help anyone out but domestic stockholders and help the upper management (the people largely responsible for this disaster) to keep up thier lavish lifestyles.

In my experience, a toyota will run a million years longer than a ford. They're more durable, and they waste less gas. If I had the choice, I would never go near another american car.

not at all. I'm a die hard Chevy fan, and hold nothing against Ford or Dodge. But, the big three aren't what they used to be. And all manufacturers are doing that same thing...aka cheaper built cars/trucks, for higher prices. If you only new how cheap things are made nowadays....

As far as imports, I think you get more for the money as far as longer lasting.....more resale values, better mpg....but also lots more expensive in the shop...

I think anything newer than a 1980 anything should be junked.....

Toyota is very dependable, and I have had the least trouble with toyota.

but they are small, and you are safer in a bigger car.

I've had all kinds of cars, and I have to say Toyota is the most dependable, and last along time, but a big American car is probably safer, check the crash test site, http://www.crashtest.com/ you need to be safe too, not just think about everything else.

Do your research and buy what you want. Stay away from brand new, depreciation will kill you even if the payment doesnt. That way too, your money isn't going overseas, even if the original owner's did.

its almost impossible to buy a 100% American product anymore. Even our beloved Harley-Davidsons are infected with Asian electronics and Mexican components.

I love my Acura, and would never buy a Ford. With foreign cars, all you gotta do is basically keep the oil changed, and you're good to go.

There's nothing wrong with buying "American" cars built in Mexico and Canada.... it helps keep mechanics and tow truck drivers in business.
