i have layered medium length hair and i want relaxed spiral curls, but every time i try using a curling iron (3/4 in barrel) my hair doesn't even curl. only on the ends there is a little tiny curl, but i want curls that start from almost the roots, down. how do i get those kind of curls? thanks for helping.

I would try and use hot rollers instead of a curling iron....that would work better.

when curling it, do you start at the bottom? if so, then thats your problem. Here's what you do...
When you get out of the shower, blow your hair dry until its about half done. then put some product on it. Some mousse preferably, along with some frizz cream if you have it. finish drying. Don't straighten or brush your hair as you go. And when its all dry, spray hairspray throughout, hairspray about a foot away from ur head. Then start curling at the top. Start with wrapping the top (as close to the root as u can get) around the curling iron barrel. It should look silly with the bottom hanging out, and just the top around the iron. then slowly slide down, pulling the rest of your hair in. Mostly do the top of your hair, the bottom isn't seen as much, so just curl the bottom of the underlayer of hair. And finish with something glossing...like pomade or a shining gloss. Good luck!

you do not aspect out in case you needed spirals or purely curls. make confident your hair is sparkling and dry. put in some type of product on your hair like mousse, gel or warmth activated curling spray, take a small area and wrap your hair around the iron. For spirals carry the iron at a 40 5 degree attitude. save hair wrapped around the iron for type of 15 sec, yet when that doesn't take rewrap and carry for yet another 30 seconds, once you're taking it off the iron and the curl takes structure spray hair spray to maintain its curl. I favor warm curlers than the curling iron purely because it swifter to make curls, you get a lot less burns on your skin and your hands do not get drained from protecting the iron.

I have the same problem so I put hairspray all over the piece I'm going to curl and let it dry then comb it out and curl it. Make sure to use really small pieces (it will take a while) and you may need to use more hairspray after the curl is set. The key is to use small chunks of hair!

Sometimes when your hair isn't holding a spiral and only bending you may have damaged or split ends. After a trim you can retry spiraling your hair and also make sure the curling iron is hot enough the size is fine.

There is a special curling iron made to do this....hold on let me get you a link to one...

They are called spiral irons, also use smaller sized chunks of hair... about a quarter of an inch wide, and very thin....It will take a long time to do, but it works... plus I use the conair one myself....
and they are pretty affordable hair tools... good luck

Honestly, I think you should do it in a salon, not that you don't know how, but they may do a better job. You might end up damaging your hair if you do it yourself. If you don't have the money, then do it yourself, but don't use the iron on one spot for too long. Good luck.
