I'm with Chippy! Mav is so cute wif her lil bow!

I don't know the exact differences between their beliefs, but I can tell you that they are based on differing beliefs of cailiphs. Cailiphs are those who took the place of Muhammad after his death...essentially, they were the "popes" of Islam. At one point in time, debate began to grow over who was to be the next cailiph, and the infighting got so bad that two groups formed because of it. Beyond that, I have no idea what the differences are. ;p

I do not intend to get into a theological discussion, as you are really better off looking them up in an encyclopedia than relying on the numerous distorted, bitter and twisted comments above. But I just want to correct the error made by missgigglebunny. The major Islamic terrorist organisations and their supporters are Sunni, not Shia. More than 98% of shia in Iraq reject al Qaeda and Osama, while a large minority of Sunnis support these terrorists:

Simply Sunnis are muslims but shiites are NOT MUSLIM.
They argue that they are muslims . This is what the shias believe in:
The doctrine of Imaamat: Apart from Prophets, there are another group of God appointed persons called Imams. These are people who are infallible and have access to a knowledge that is not accessible by ordinary people. The world cannot be empty of an Imam otherwise it will be destroyed. In the Islamic context, these individuals are 12 people among the descendants of the Holy Prophet who are appointed by no one but God to lead Muslims. Any one who chooses any leader other than these 12 is misguided and not a complete believer. The twelfth (last) of the above Imams is Mahdi and is alive and in occultation (now) for more than 1000 years and will come out of his occultation when God wants".

Sunnis donot believe this. Nowhere in the Quran or hadeeth of the prophet peace be upon him is any of this written. So number 1. they (shias)have made up their own beliefs. Also we believe that only that Prophets of God are sinless. They assign the same status to the 12 Imams as the prophet peace be upon him.
In order for anyone to enter the fold of Islam we muslims need to recite the kalimah ( a testomony of faith) which transalates as " There is non worthy of worship besides Allah and Muhammed (pbuh) is the messenger of Allah. Full stop. The shias add on to this saying Ali is the Wali(friend) of Allah. Now, the shias place extra importance on the bloodline of the prophet which we donot.
Ali may God be pleased with him, was a companion and cousin of Muhammed (pbuh) We donot raise him in rank though the Shias do.

Basicly it is very deep and complicated, but they contradict and reject much of the true Islam.
Here are their unilsamic beliefs:
Allaah often lies and does mistakes. (usool-e-kaafi, page #328, yaqoob kulaini, vol1). This to us is blasphemy.

The hypocrit companions of the prophet took very much out of Quran (took out the verses). (Ihtijaj-e-tibri, page #382).
We believe that the Quraan is complete.

When Imaam Mehdi (the Anti Christ) comes he will bring with him the real and original Quran. (Ahsan-ul-maqaal, page #336, safdar Husain najfi). We believe that it has already been revealed to the Prophet Muhammed peace be upon him.

The person who says that the present Quran is complete is a liar because the “complete Quran” was compiled by Hazrat Ali. (Fasl-ul-khitaab fee tahreef kitaab rab-ul- arbab, page #4, Noori Tibri).
this is a total rejection of the true beliefs of Islam.

Abu Bakr is non muslim and the one who loves Abu Bakr is also non muslim. (Faq-ul-yaqeen, page #690, Baqar majlisi).
We believe:
Abu Bakr may God be pleased with him was the prophets best companion. He had been gauranteed paradise by God himself (its in the Quraan) and in the texts of Muhammed peace be upon him. ). Our beliefs stem from real Islam as thaught by the prophet Muhammed and followed by his companions.
The shias beliefs are warped and distorted and completely of the track.

Sorry for the long answer but this is just the tip of the differences between shia and muslim as u may know us as sunnis.
Donot want to bore you with more complex info but hope you understand.

It started by picking a different Caliph. About the 11th I think. It is the central leader. Exactly like a pope but different. They just drifted apart after that.

Sunnis believe in the first three caliphs after Muhammed(PBUH*) were to rule Arabia and Shiites believe Ali(Muhammed's nephew) was suppossed to be the next caliph.
