It depends on what brand and quality you are feeding. I just looked on a bag of Innova, and it says 3 1/2 cups to 4 1/2 cups, depending on the dog's level of activity..

I'd start with about 5 cups a day. My Great Dane is on the smaller side, she weighs closer to 100lbs, but she has a lot of energy. I feed her 2.5 scoops of Purina Dog Chow a day (each scoop is supposed to be two cups). She's maintained her weight, she's athletic, but not thin. My English Mastiff ate 7 cups a day of the same stuff, even though he weighed almost 200lbs, but he didn't move around as much.

The way I found out is I first found a food that my dogs liked (my Mastiff had a very sensitive stomach and for some reason, Purina Dog Chow was the one brand he could digest OK). Then give them about 3 scoops in a day (6 cups). If they don't clean out their bowl, then give them a little bit less next time, if they clean out their bowl, give them a little bit more. Watch their weight, watch their behavior. If they start begging for food every time you eat (or at least do so more than before), then you know they are hungry. A 40lb bag of food will probably last you for 3-4 weeks with a dog that size. So depending on the brand of the food I'd say you'll spend between 18 and 60 per month on food.

It is also true what the other people here have said about your dog needing less food if it's higher quality. If you can afford it, buy Eukanuba or Science Diet. If not, buy something generic but still with a brand name, like Pedigree Pal, Purina Dog Chow, or Kibbles and Bits. Don't risk it with the no-name brands at your local grocery store.

Once you've found the food that works for your dog and your budget, use the exercise above to figure out the right amount.

Amount you need to feed depends on the quality of the food being fed.The better the quality of food the less you need to feed.

I had a 175# Dane..I was feeding her Chicken Soup For The Dog Lover's Soul and she was only eating 4 cups a day, 2 in the morning and 2 at night and I had to watch her closely since she tended to gain weight on that amount.

Stay away from low quality foods such as IAMS/Eukanuba, Science Diet, Pedigree, Purina Dog Chow, etc..they are loaded with fillers and take a lot more to give your dog the proper nutrition.

Read the labels of the dog food you are feeding. A large breed dog may need 5 cups of a cheap dog food but only 3 cups of a premium dog food. Read the label and adjust according to your dog's needs.

I'd say 2 1/2 to 3 cups, depending on the quality of the food and the age of the dog. Puppies need more, seniors or overweight dogs need less. And I think the feeding guides on the bag are always way too high.

Assuming it is a large breed dog and is not overweight... look at the bag od dog food, they often give suggested serving sizes, This can be different between different brands of dog food. The cheaper the food, the MORE you have to feed your dog. The higher quality food contains more of the nutrients they need and less filler, so they don't need to eat as much

Check the side of the bag for the feeding guidelines. However, these are just guidelines, and you should adjust as needed. If he is fairly active or a puppy, you should feed more or for a fairly inactive dog a little less. Basically, as long as your dog has a good figure, you are feeding correctly.
