I have been given an opportunity to earn commission by acting as the agent for an established South American Painter. I have been sent 8 paintings, each measuring 1.5 x 1.3m approx, all very beautiful and stylistically distinct. I have no idea how to go about selling them. Do I need to frame them/put them on a backing frame first? Can I ask local galleries to display them? In the artists homeland they retail for between 1000 and 3000 pounds sterling (in native currency) and if I had the funds to collect artwork then I would certainly buy one. Please advise if there are any fees for displaying in galleries - any other ideas for marketing would be great

Paintings should be framed attractively. Make sure information about each painting is on the reverse side of the canvas and clearly visible. The artist should have provided you with this information.

Local galleries may agree to sell the paintings for you, but they will charge a commission, usually a percentage of the selling price.

Your best bet for selling paintings is to auction them. Is the painter well-known? If so, you might be able to interest the larger auction houses like Christies or Southeby's...they will also charge a commission. You should be able to find smaller auction houses in your area...I don't know where you live but you might research it and see what's available.

Ebay is another option you might try. Local art shows are yet another possibility.

A lot of it depends on where you live. If you're near or in a big city, many artsy cafe's and coffee shops will buy your art and turn around to sell them (that's if they like them). Also, check into local art galleries, art museums, and art schools. Many of them can help you out more than you could imagine. But if you're in an area with none of that stuff close by, you can always try Ebay and see what you can get for some of them.

A coworker of mine displays his stuff in galleries and they get a whopping commission if the item sells. They usually price it for him after he tells them what he'd like to make.

They will also frame and mat for him (for a price)

If said painter isn't established in your area/country I highly doubt you'll get what he gets in his native land.

Google Doyle New York. It is one of the biggest auction houses in the US and they handle fine art, jewelry, etc. You can contact them to find out what these paintings are worth.
